LDS Membership Growth over the Years

A History of LDS Church membership

JOSEPH SMITH (1830-1844)

Joseph Smith officially organized The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1829 with 5 other people, he being its President and Prophet in 1830.  By 1838, that number had grown to 17,881 members.

In 1837, many of the Saints invested in a quasi-bank called the Kirtland Safety Society. Joseph Smith worked as cashier for it. Shortly after that, the Panic of 1837 hit, which caused hundreds of banks and quasi-banks to collapse, the KSS included. Many member, including half of the Apostles, blamed Smith for its failure, and many left the church over it in 1838. In 1839 church membership had slipped to 16,460.

As the Saints regrouped and new Apostles were called, the church was able to again grow. By the end of 1844, the year of Smith's murder, membership stood at 26,146.

BRIGHAM YOUNG (1847-1877)

While Young was not declared the new Prophet until 1847, he still led as the President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.  Members splintered off to other groups, led by Sidney Rigdon and others.  Still, by 1847, church membership hit 34,694.

As the Saints migrated to Utah territory, they were still able to go abroad and find more converts.  By 1854, the church now stood at 68,429. Famine and drought hit the Territory, causing more fiery sermons to demand repentance, as well as an increase in propaganda against the church back east.  President James Buchanan, perhaps as a distraction from the troubles of the soon-to-secede South, took an interest in quashing the "Mormon rebellion" out west.  In 1857, the year of the Mountain Meadows Massacre, church membership fell to its lowest point in five years at 55,236.  1857 was also the last year membership would be lower that it was the year before.

Young was able to have smoother relations with later US presidents, and Utah's loyalty to the Union North worked to their benefit.  By Young's death in 1877, church membership grew to 115,065.

Since 2000, the church has seen its growth steady out between 2-3% each year. Pres. Monson announced that in September, the church passed 15 million, which would put 2013 paced to end somewhere between 15,060,00 - 15,120,000.

LDS Population - US and Worldwide

I was looking through the history of LDS church membership, and also at 2007's Pew's research on religious affiliation in the US and found some interesting things.  Starting with the Pew numbers.

US

1.8% of US adults claim were raised LDS; 1.7% of US adults currently identify as LDS, and yet the LDS US population is keeping just ahead of general US population growth. (Worldwide, the Church is growing at more than twice the pace of world population growth.)

56.5% of the total US population stay with the faith (or lack thereof) they were raised with.

In general, 45% of men and 42% of women changed religions.  The age group that changed most was 40-59. Age 70+ had the highest percentage that did not change religions, followed by 18-29.

There are approximately 6.32 million baptized Mormons in the US; about 5.32 million who consider themselves LDS.

There are 15 million members.
These break downs are from 2011, when it was around 14.4 million.  The fastest growth is in Central and South America.

This leaves about 1 million members scattered around the rest of the world.  For example, the continent of Asia, minus the Philippines, still has over 4 billion people in it, but only about 390,000 are LDS.  China and India account for 2.55 billion people and only have about 22,000 LDS members within their populations. Another 737 million people live in Europe, with just under 500,000 being LDS.

Brigham Young called three of his sons to be Apostles while he was Prophet. One of them resigned from the Quorum of 12 when he was accused of misusing church funds, and another died before Young.  John Taylor called one of his sons, who was later excommunicated for refusing to discontinue polygamy.  Wilford Woodruff called one of his sons, but he died from smallpox at age 31.  Joseph F. Smith called two of his sons, one being Joseph Fielding Smith.  Joseph F. Smith was also the last Prophet to call one of his relatives to be an Apostle.

(I find the relations fascinating. I'm the great-great-great grandson of Amasa Lyman, and my wife's the great-great-great granddaughter of Jedidiah M. Grant.)
