I did a previous post on guessing who the next Apostle might be, but we've hit a rare section in time in the LDS church when two Apostles will be called at the same time. This has happened before. Dieter F. Uchtdorf and David A. Bednar were called together in 2004. Russell M. Nelson and Dallin H. Oaks were called together in 1984 (though Oaks had to wait a month to be set apart). Before that you have to go back to Spencer W. Kimball and Ezra Taft Benson in 1943. When two Apostles are called the same day, the older one has seniority.
Never in the history of the LDS Church has an Apostle been called that the prophet wasn't already acquainted with on some level.
I wanted to expand the field in this post, look at a broader section of who it could be, and also take into account two being called at the same time. But first, let's look at the current 13, and where they came from. (By seniority)
THOMAS S. MONSON - Called to be an Apostle at age 36 in 1963. No one has been called that young since. He'd served as a bishop but more importantly as a mission president in Canada and then Editor of the Deseret News. He would have had regular contact with church leaders, allowing them to know him and consider him as a candidate when a vacancy arose. Monson in particularly worked with Gordon B. Hinckley, who ran the Church's public affairs before being called as an Apostle two years before Monson. Monson also at one point had Harold B. Lee for a stake president.
Career expertise: Publishing
RUSSELL M. NELSON - Called to be an Apostle at age 59 in 1984. He came about his service in a rare way. He performed open-heart surgery on Spencer W. Kimball in 1972, around the same time he was called to be Sunday School General President. He served in that calling for eight years and then a regional representative for four years when he was called to be an Apostle.
Career expertise: Medicine
DALLIN H. OAKS - Called to be an Apostle at age 51 in 1984. Oaks was well-known by the Brethren when they called him to be president of BYU, where he served for nine years. He then instantly joined the Utah Supreme Court but resigned from that once he was called to be an Apostle. Oaks was not currently serving in church leadership when he was called.
Career expertise: Law, Church Education
M. RUSSELL BALLARD - Called to be an Apostle two days before his 57th birthday in 1985. He was the grandson of apostle Hyrum M. Smith and great-grandson of Joseph F. Smith. On his other side, he was the grandson Melvin J. Ballard, who served for years in the Q12 with Gordon B. Hinckley's uncle Alonzo. He was a mission president when he was called to join the First Quorum of the Seventy, and he was in the Presidency of the Seventy when called to be an Apostle. At the time, Pres. Kimball and 1st Counselor Marion G. Romney were incapacitated, so this calling likely came from 2nd Counselor Hinckley as anyone else. Ballard's daughter married David B. Haight's grandson.
Career expertise: Business
RICHARD G. SCOTT - Called to be an Apostle at age 59 in 1988. His father worked closely with Ezra Taft Benson in Washington DC. He was a misson president, then a regional representative, then joined the First Quorum of Seventy, then in the Presidency of the Seventy when called.
Career expertise: Nuclear Science
ROBERT D. HALES - Called to be an Apostle at age 61 in 1994. He was called to the First Quorum of Seventy in 1976, then he served as Presiding Bishop the nine years leading up to his calling as Apostle and was considered key in balancing church finances in the 1980's and 1990's. He'd run several successful businesses before his calling.
Career expertise: Business
JEFFREY R. HOLLAND - Called to be an Apostle at age 53 in 1994. He succeeded Oaks as President of BYU. Nine years later he went straight from there to the First Quorum of Seventy. he also served as Commissioner of the Church Educations System (CES).
Career expertise: Church Education
HENRY B. EYRING - Called to be an Apostle at age 61 in 1995. He was the third Apostle in as many General Conferences to be called, and after him, the Church went nine years before another one was needed. He is married to Pres. Kimball's niece. He was president of Rick's College. He was a Commissioner of CES. He was a Counselor to Hales in the Presiding Bishopric, and he was in the First Quorum of Seventy when he was called to be an Apostle.
Career expertise: Business, Physics, Church Education
DIETER F. UCHTDORF - Called to be an Apostle at age 63 in 2004. He'd been a stake president, in the 2nd Quorum of Seventy, 1st Quorum of Seventy, then in Presidency of Seventy when called to be an Apostle.
Career expertise: Aviation, Business
DAVID A. BEDNAR - Called to be an Apostle ate age 51 in 2004. He succeeded Eyring as president of Ricks' College and helped transition it into BYU-Idaho. He was an area authority while he worked at BYUI.
Career expertise: Church Education
QUENTIN L. COOK - Called to be an Apostle at age 67 in 2007. His mother was a Kimball, so he's second-cousins with Spencer W. He was a missionary companion of Holland. He went from bishop to stake president to area authority to 2nd Quorum of Seventy to 1st Quorum of Seventy to Presidency of the Seventy to Apostle.
Career expertise: Business, Law
D. TODD CHRISTOFFERSON - Called to be an Apostle at age 63 in 2008. Richard G. Scott was his mission president when he served his mission. He was called to the 1st Quorum of Seventy in 1993 and in the Presidency of the Seventy in 1998. He was executive director for the church's Family & Church History Department.
Career expertise: Law
NEIL L. ANDERSEN - Called to be an Apostle at age 57 in 2009. He'd been called the the 1st Quorum of Seventy in 1993 and into the Presidency of the Seventy in 2005.
Career expertise: Business
So these are their experiences and how they may have been known before they will called. One should expect there will be prior relationships for the new Apostles. So first let's look at the likely pool of talent.
THE PRESIDENCY OF THE SEVENTY
Statistically it's a virtual guarantee that one of the two will come from this field, if not both. The Presidency of the Seventy works most closely and most often with the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve than any other Seventy. Four of the last five Apostles called came from the Presidency of the Seventy. The Prophet will have a good idea of how these men could fit into the Quorum.
1. RONALD A. RASBAND (2/6/1951) worked as COO of Huntsman Chemical before being called as president of the New York New York Mission. Called to the 1st Quorum of the 70 in 2000 and has been in the Presidency of 70 since 2005. If he is not called as an Apostle, he'll likely be released this General Conference and go back to being the 1st Quorum of 70. Members of the Presidency of 70 do not tend to serve longer than ten years.
Career expertise: Business
2. L. WHITNEY CLAYTON (2/24/1950) was a partner at a law firm before his calling to the 1st Quorum of 70 in 2001. He served as assistant executive director to the Family & Church History Department with Christofferson. He helped Ballard and Cook with the church's efforts on Prop 8, and he was called to Presidency of the Seventy in 2008. He's said to have been involved with regional training that led to more high-profile excommunications like Kate Kelly and John Dehlin. I think if he were selected, he'd be more in the Packer/Ballard retrenchment mold of Apostle.
Career expertise: Law
3. DONALD L. HALLSTROM (7/27/1949) was born and raised in Hawaii and worked in real estate out there. He was president of the Honolulu Hawaii stake before getting called as a regional representative, then area authority, then to the 1st Quorum of Seventy in 2000. He's been in the Presidency since 2009.
Career expertise: Real Estate, Finance
4. RICHARD J. MAYNES (10/29/1950) played basketball at BYU before graduating from there in business management. He went on to be CEO of Fountain Fresh Intl. He was a mission president in Mexico Monterrey and was called to the 2nd Quorum of 70 in 1997, moved to 1st Quorum in 2001, and joined the Presidency in 2012.
Career expertise: Business
5. CRAIG C. CHRISTENSEN (3/18/1956) played football at BYU before graduating from there in accounting. He later got an MBA and after buying some companies, he taught at BYU. He was a mission president for Mexico Mexico City and was called to 2nd Quorum of 70 in 2002, then moved to 1st Quorum in 2008 before being called to Presidency in 2012.
Career expertise: Business
6. ULISSES SOARES (10/2/1958) is our first non-American option. He was born and raised in Sao Paolo, Brazil. He earned his MBA and after working at a tire company, he got a job as a senior auditor before becoming director of temporal affairs for the LDS Church's Brazil South area. He was a mission president in Portugal and he joined the 1st Quorum of 70 in 2005 before joining the Presidency in 2013.
Career expertise: Business, Finance
7. LYNN G. ROBBINS (10/27/1952) was one of the co-founders of Franklin Quest, which later became FranklinCovey. He was a mission president in Uruguay Montevideo and was then called to the 2nd Quorum of 70 in 1997. He moved to 1st Quorum of 70 in 2000 and joined the Presidency in 2014.
Career expertise: Business
There are 63 member of the 1st Quorum of the Seventy and 21 members in the 2nd Quorum, so I won't profile them all. I'll just focus on ones I think are likely under consideration.
PRESIDING BISHOPRIC
But first, it's been a while since someone from the Presiding Bishopric was called as an Apostle, so I'll profile those three next.
GARY E. STEVENSON, 59, served his mission in Japan and later went back as president of the Japan Nagoya mission. He was the COO of ICON Health. He was called to the 1st Quorum of 70 in 2008 but then called as Presiding Bishop in 2012.
Career expertise: Business
GERALD CAUSEE, 51, was born in France, and after getting his MBA, he worked as a general manager for Ponoma, France's largest food distributor. He was a stake president and area authority before being called into the 1st Quorum of 70 in 2008. He became 1st Counselor in Presiding Bishopric in 2012.
Career expertise: Business
DEAN M. DAVIES, 64, served his mission in Uruguay and Paraguay before being president of the Puerto Rico San Juan mission. He worked in real estate and construction before Pres, Hinckley asked him to work for the church, overseeing construction of churches and temples. He was then called to be 2nd counselor in 2012.
Career expertise: Real Estate
Now to explore possibilities in the 1st and 2nd Quorums of Seventy. I will highlight different regions of the world and who might come from there. The year is when they were called to the Seventy.
AFRICA
2013 - Edward Dube - 5/12/1962 - 53 - Zimbabwe
2001 - Christoffel Golden - 6/1/1952 - 63 - South Africa
2009 - Joseph W. Sitati - 5/16/1952 - 63 - Kenya
Joseph W. Sitati joined the church in 1986. He was the first black African general authority. He was the first stake president of Kenya. He worked in the oil and gas industry before working as the director of the church's public affairs in Africa. He was president of the Nigeria Uyo mission before getting called to the Seventy. If someone from Africa is called, I'd give him the edge.
However, Edward Dube is ten years younger and if they want to make the Quorum younger (Bednar is the youngest Apostle, at age 63), I could see them going with him. He joined the church in 1984 and served a mission in South Africa and Zimbabwe two years later. He worked in CES in Zimbabwe for the church and was president of the Zimbabwe Harare mission.
ASIA & PACIFIC ISLANDS
2009 - Yoon Hwan Choi - 5/18/1957 - 58 - South Korea
2007 - Michael John U. Teh - 6/25/1965 - 50 - Philippines
2014 - Chi Hong (Sam) Wong - 5/25/1962 - 53 - Hong Kong
2011 - Kazuhiko Yamashita - 9/1/1953 - 61 - Japan
2009 - Koichi Aoyagi - 3/24/1945 - 70 - Japan
2011 - O. Vincent Haleck - 1/1/1949 - 66 - Samoa
Chi Hong (Sam) Wong was the first speaker in General Conference to give his address in a language other than English (Cantonese). Wong hails from Hong Kong. He joined the church in 1982 and went to school and BYU-Hawaii before moving back to Hong Kong. his background is in business, but his unique perspective could really help the church open up China.
Michael John U. Teh would be younger than Bednar was when he was called. He's the second Filipino to be a general authority, and he's spent his career working for the church, lastly as a manager for their statistical records division.
Yoon Hwan Choi is currently president of the Washington Seattle mission. Kazuhiko Yamashita is currently president of the Japan Nagoya mission.
AUSTRALIA
2011 - Ian S. Ardern - 2/28/1954 - 61 - New Zealand
2013 - Terence M. Vinson - 5/1/1951 - 64 - Australia
Ian S. Ardern works for CES in New Zealand, and he was president of the Fiji Suva mission.
EUROPE
2006 - David S. Baxter - 2/7/1955 - 60 - United Kingdom
2010 - Patrick Kearon - 7/18/1961 - 54 - United Kingdom
2014 - Jorg Klebingat - 12/19/1967 - 47 - Germany
2007 - Erich W. Kopischke - 10/20/1956 - 58 - Germany
2008 - Jose A. Teixeira - 2/24/1961 - 54 - Portugal
1996 - Francisco J. Vinas - 12/28/1946 - 68 - Spain
2010 - Per G. Malm - 9/12/1948 - 66 - Sweden
Jorg Klebingat is the youngest of all the General Authorities, but I have a hard time seeing them pick a second German. He's lived in the US for a few years though as a business consultant, got his masters from BYU, before he was called to be president of the Ukraine Kyiv mission.
Jose A. Teixeira is the first G.A. from Portugal, and he's worked as an international controller for the church's finances in Europe and Asia.
CENTRAL AMERICA
2011 - Jose L. Alonso - 11/17/1958 - 56 - Mexico
2005 - Benjamin De Hoyos - 2/20/1953 - 62 - Mexico
2007 - Enrique R. Falabella - 5/1/1950 - 65 - Guatemala
2006 - Daniel L. Johnson - 12/15/1946 - 68 - Mexico
2013 - Arnulfo Valenzuela - 5/1/1959 - 56 - Mexico
Benjamin De Hoyos has worked as a CES employee and also as president of the Mexico Tuxtla Gutierrez mission.
Jose L. Alonso was a pediatrician. Enrique R. Falabella was an agronomical engineer.
SOUTH AMERICA
2005 - Marcos A. Aidukaitis - 8/30/1959 - 55 - Brazil
2001 - Claudio R.M. Costa - 3/25/1949 - 66 - Brazil
2008 - Eduardo Gavarrett - 5/11/1956 - 59 - Uruguay
2008 - Carlos A. Godoy - 2/4/1961 - 54 - Brazil
2001 - Walter F. Gonzalez - 11/18/1952 - 62 - Uruguay
2008 - Rafael E. Pino - 10/27/1955 - 59 - Venezuela
2010 - Juan A. Uceda - 7/10/1953 - 62 - Peru
2008 - Jorge F. Zeballos - 7/19/1955 - 60 - Chile
2007 - Claudio D. Zivic - 12/19/1948 - 66 - Argentina
2010 - Jairo Mazzagardi - 4/10/1947 - 68 - Brazil
If you told me that of the two new Apostles, the older one was foreign-born, I'd guess Claudio R.M. Costa above all others. He's worked in CES in Brazil and was president of the Brazil Manaus mission. On the other hand, he was released from the Presidency of Seventy after only four years, so maybe he missed his window.
Walter F. Gonzalez was in the Presidency of 70 for six years. He went to school in Argentina and Ecuador and later served as president over one of the Ecudaor missions. He also worked for CES in Ecuador.
Juan A. Uceda worked for CES in Peru before moving to New Jersey in 2003 to help his father with his business.
Marcos A. Aidukaitis was born in Brazil but has a Lithuanian father who lived his first few years in Scotland. Aiukaitis graduated from BYU and served in many capacities in Brazil.

Michael T. Ringwood is Russell M. Nelson's son-in-law.
Of the five non-Anglo-Saxon 70's, Larry J. Echo Hawk is the oldest and Hugo Montoya is the youngest.
Now to start narrowing these down into those I think are most likely, and I realize much of this may be similar to when I was speculating over one Apostle. I think the most likely combination will be one American and one non-American.
FAVORITES IF SENIOR APOSTLE IS FOREIGN
1. CLAUDIO R.M. COSTA - 66 - Brazil
2. WALTER F. GONZALEZ - 62 - Uruguay
3. JOSEPH W. SITATI - 62 - Kenya
4. BENJAMIN DE HOYOS - 62 - Mexico
5. JUAN A. UCEDA - 62 - Peru
I still give the edge to Costa if they go this route. They're familiar with him, and Brazil's the 5th most populous country in the world.
FAVORITE IF JUNIOR APOSTLE IS FOREIGN
1. ULISSES SOARES - 56 - Brazil
2. EDWARD DUBE - 53 - Zimbabwe
3. CHI HONG (SAM) WONG - 53 - Hong Kong
4. MICHAEL JOHN U. TEH - 50 - Philippines
5. GERALD CAUSEE - 51 - France
Any of these Apostles would open doors, but Soares seems to be in the right position.
FAVORITE IF SENIOR APOSTLE IS AMERICAN
1. RONALD A. RASBAND - 64
2. DONALD L. HALLSTROM - 66
3. GERRITT W. GONG - 61
4. SHAYNE M. BOWEN - 60
5. L. WHITNEY CLAYTON - 65
Rasband seems the most groomed, but to have a Chinese-American like Gong would be an interesting choice. I think Clayton has his fans in the Q12, but there'd be a wave of resignations if he was made an Apostle.
FAVORITE IF JUNIOR APOSTLE IS AMERICAN
1. JAMES J. HAMULA - 57
2. CRAIG C. CHRISTENSEN - 59
3. GARY E. STEVENSON - 59
4. HUGO MONTOYA - 55
5. SCOTT D. WHITING - 54
Hamula's been working on how best to increase baptisms now that there are more missionaries in the world, so I could see him as a strong possibility. Christensen's the youngest American in the Presidency of the 70.
IF BOTH APOSTLES ARE FOREIGN, SOME DARK HORSES...
6. MARCOS A. AIDUKAITIS - 55 - Brazil
7. IAN S. ARDERN - 61 - New Zealand

Tackling the 'Race and the Priesthood' Essay
![]() |
| Jane Manning James |
The church has an uncomfortable history on race. Just about all churches do from the 1800's, but the creeds and theologies of the 19th century crept into church teachings, and were seemingly justified based on passages from the Book of Mormon and the Pearl of Great Price. These allowed Brigham Young to double-down on his racist inclinations, calling for "death on the spot" for those who would participate in interracial marriage.
But before I get too deep into anything else like that, let's look at the "Race and the Priesthood" essay from LDS.org.
In theology and practice, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints embraces the universal human family. Latter-day Saint scripture and teachings affirm that God loves all of His children and makes salvation available to all. God created the many diverse races and ethnicities and esteems them all equally. As the Book of Mormon puts it, “all are alike unto God.”
The structure and organization of the Church encourage racial integration. Latter-day Saints attend Church services according to the geographical boundaries of their local ward, or congregation. By definition, this means that the racial, economic, and demographic composition of Mormon congregations generally mirrors that of the wider local community. The Church’s lay ministry also tends to facilitate integration: a black bishop may preside over a mostly white congregation; a Hispanic woman may be paired with an Asian woman to visit the homes of a racially diverse membership. Church members of different races and ethnicities regularly minister in one another’s homes and serve alongside one another as teachers, as youth leaders, and in myriad other assignments in their local congregations. Such practices make The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints a thoroughly integrated faith.
Despite this modern reality, for much of its history—from the mid-1800s until 1978—the Church did not ordain men of black African descent to its priesthood or allow black men or women to participate in temple endowment or sealing ordinances.
The Church was established in 1830, during an era of great racial division in the United States. At the time, many people of African descent lived in slavery, and racial distinctions and prejudice were not just common but customary among white Americans. Those realities, though unfamiliar and disturbing today, influenced all aspects of people’s lives, including their religion. Many Christian churches of that era, for instance, were segregated along racial lines. From the beginnings of the Church, people of every race and ethnicity could be baptized and received as members. Toward the end of his life, Church founder Joseph Smith openly opposed slavery. There has never been a Churchwide policy of segregated congregations.
During the first two decades of the Church’s existence, a few black men were ordained to the priesthood. One of these men, Elijah Abel, also participated in temple ceremonies in Kirtland, Ohio, and was later baptized as proxy for deceased relatives in Nauvoo, Illinois. There is no reliable evidence that any black men were denied the priesthood during Joseph Smith’s lifetime. In a private Church council three years after Joseph Smith’s death, Brigham Young praised Q. Walker Lewis, a black man who had been ordained to the priesthood, saying, “We have one of the best Elders, an African.”
In 1852, President Brigham Young publicly announced that men of black African descent could no longer be ordained to the priesthood, though thereafter blacks continued to join the Church through baptism and receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost. Following the death of Brigham Young, subsequent Church presidents restricted blacks from receiving the temple endowment or being married in the temple. Over time, Church leaders and members advanced many theories to explain the priesthood and temple restrictions. None of these explanations is accepted today as the official doctrine of the Church. From 1852 to 1978 it was considered doctrine of the church. When it says "Church leaders" advanced theories over the restrictions, this includes prophets and apostles of the church. Young, Taylor, Woodruff, Snow, Smith, Grant, Smith, McKay,Smith and Lee all kept the ban in place when they served as Presidents of the church.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was restored amidst a highly contentious racial culture in which whites were afforded great privilege. In 1790, the U.S. Congress limited citizenship to “free white person[s].” Over the next half century, issues of race divided the country—while slave labor was legal in the more agrarian South, it was eventually banned in the more urbanized North. Even so, racial discrimination was widespread in the North as well as the South, and many states implemented laws banning interracial marriage. In 1857, the U.S. Supreme Court declared that blacks possessed “no rights which the white man was bound to respect.” A generation after the Civil War (1861–65) led to the end of slavery in the United States, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that “separate but equal” facilities for blacks and whites were constitutional, a decision that legalized a host of public color barriers until the Court reversed itself in 1954. Not until 1967 did the Court strike down laws forbidding interracial marriage.
In 1850, the U.S. Congress created Utah Territory, and the U.S. president appointed Brigham Young to the position of territorial governor. Southerners who had converted to the Church and migrated to Utah with their slaves raised the question of slavery’s legal status in the territory. In two speeches delivered before the Utah territorial legislature in January and February 1852, Brigham Young announced a policy restricting men of black African descent from priesthood ordination. At the same time, President Young said that at some future day, black Church members would “have [all] the privilege and more” enjoyed by other members.
The justifications for this restriction echoed the widespread ideas about racial inferiority that had been used to argue for the legalization of black “servitude” in the Territory of Utah. According to one view, which had been promulgated in the United States from at least the 1730s, blacks descended from the same lineage as the biblical Cain, who slew his brother Abel. Those who accepted this view believed that God’s “curse” on Cain was the mark of a dark skin. Black servitude was sometimes viewed as a second curse placed upon Noah’s grandson Canaan as a result of Ham’s indiscretion toward his father. Although slavery was not a significant factor in Utah’s economy and was soon abolished, the restriction on priesthood ordinations remained. What this obfuscates is that the Book of Moses says Cain's curse was black skin, and the Book of Abraham says the black skin continued through Ham's lineage. (Maybe these chapters should be decanonized?) It also skips past the fact that yes, for a few years slavery was legal in Utah.
Even after 1852, at least two black Mormons continued to hold the priesthood. When one of these men, Elijah Abel, petitioned to receive his temple endowment in 1879, his request was denied. Jane Manning James, a faithful black member who crossed the plains and lived in Salt Lake City until her death in 1908, similarly asked to enter the temple; she was allowed to perform baptisms for the dead for her ancestors but was not allowed to participate in other ordinances. The curse of Cain was often put forward as justification for the priesthood and temple restrictions. Around the turn of the century, another explanation gained currency: blacks were said to have been less than fully valiant in the premortal battle against Lucifer and, as a consequence, were restricted from priesthood and temple blessings.Side note: Jane Manning James was sealed by proxy to Joseph Smith as his eternal servant in 1894. She fought all her life to be sealed to Walker Lewis, one of the few recorded black men to receive the priesthood from Smith. (She was a true pioneer and I look forward to meeting her in the next life.)
By the late 1940s and 1950s, racial integration was becoming more common in American life. Church President David O. McKay emphasized that the restriction extended only to men of black African descent. The Church had always allowed Pacific Islanders to hold the priesthood, and President McKay clarified that black Fijians and Australian Aborigines could also be ordained to the priesthood and instituted missionary work among them. In South Africa, President McKay reversed a prior policy that required prospective priesthood holders to trace their lineage out of Africa.
Nevertheless, given the long history of withholding the priesthood from men of black African descent, Church leaders believed that a revelation from God was needed to alter the policy, and they made ongoing efforts to understand what should be done. After praying for guidance, President McKay did not feel impressed to lift the ban.
As the Church grew worldwide, its overarching mission to “go ye therefore, and teach all nations” seemed increasingly incompatible with the priesthood and temple restrictions. The Book of Mormon declared that the gospel message of salvation should go forth to “every nation, kindred, tongue, and people.” While there were no limits on whom the Lord invited to “partake of his goodness” through baptism, the priesthood and temple restrictions created significant barriers, a point made increasingly evident as the Church spread in international locations with diverse and mixed racial heritages.
Brazil in particular presented many challenges. Unlike the United States and South Africa where legal and de facto racism led to deeply segregated societies, Brazil prided itself on its open, integrated, and mixed racial heritage. In 1975, the Church announced that a temple would be built in São Paulo, Brazil. As the temple construction proceeded, Church authorities encountered faithful black and mixed-ancestry Mormons who had contributed financially and in other ways to the building of the São Paulo temple, a sanctuary they realized they would not be allowed to enter once it was completed. Their sacrifices, as well as the conversions of thousands of Nigerians and Ghanaians in the 1960s and early 1970s, moved Church leaders.
Church leaders pondered promises made by prophets such as Brigham Young that black members would one day receive priesthood and temple blessings. In June 1978, after “spending many hours in the Upper Room of the [Salt Lake] Temple supplicating the Lord for divine guidance,” Church President Spencer W. Kimball, his counselors in the First Presidency, and members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles received a revelation. “He has heard our prayers, and by revelation has confirmed that the long-promised day has come,” the First Presidency announced on June 8. The First Presidency stated that they were “aware of the promises made by the prophets and presidents of the Church who have preceded us” that “all of our brethren who are worthy may receive the priesthood.” The revelation rescinded the restriction on priesthood ordination. It also extended the blessings of the temple to all worthy Latter-day Saints, men and women. The First Presidency statement regarding the revelation was canonized in the Doctrine and Covenants as Official Declaration 2.
This “revelation on the priesthood,” as it is commonly known in the Church, was a landmark revelation and a historic event. Those who were present at the time described it in reverent terms. Gordon B. Hinckley, then a member of the Quorum of the Twelve, remembered it this way: “There was a hallowed and sanctified atmosphere in the room. For me, it felt as if a conduit opened between the heavenly throne and the kneeling, pleading prophet of God who was joined by his Brethren. … Every man in that circle, by the power of the Holy Ghost, knew the same thing. … Not one of us who was present on that occasion was ever quite the same after that. Nor has the Church been quite the same.”
Reaction worldwide was overwhelmingly positive among Church members of all races. Many Latter-day Saints wept for joy at the news. Some reported feeling a collective weight lifted from their shoulders. The Church began priesthood ordinations for men of African descent immediately, and black men and women entered temples throughout the world. Soon after the revelation, Elder Bruce R. McConkie, an apostle, spoke of new “light and knowledge” that had erased previously “limited understanding.”"Limited understanding." I'll admit as I go back through church history and look at where the church is today, this is one of my biggest obstacles. We emphasize following the prophet, but what happens when the prophet is wrong?
Today, the Church disavows the theories advanced in the past that black skin is a sign of divine disfavor or curse, or that it reflects unrighteous actions in a premortal life; that mixed-race marriages are a sin; or that blacks or people of any other race or ethnicity are inferior in any way to anyone else. Church leaders today unequivocally condemn all racism, past and present, in any form. These theories being disavowed were once considered and taught as doctrine by the prophets of the church.
Since that day in 1978, the Church has looked to the future, as membership among Africans, African Americans and others of African descent has continued to grow rapidly. While Church records for individual members do not indicate an individual’s race or ethnicity, the number of Church members of African descent is now in the hundreds of thousands.
The Church proclaims that redemption through Jesus Christ is available to the entire human family on the conditions God has prescribed. It affirms that God is “no respecter of persons” and emphatically declares that anyone who is righteous—regardless of race—is favored of Him. The teachings of the Church in relation to God’s children are epitomized by a verse in the second book of Nephi: “[The Lord] denieth none that cometh unto him, black and white, bond and free, male and female; … all are alike unto God, both Jew and Gentile.”I am glad the ban was lifted long enough ago that I have no memory of it being in place. (I was 4 at the time.) I wish it had been lifted sooner. I wish it had never been there. I wish the notion of "we don't know why the ban was instituted" or "well, it must have been there for a reason" could be stamped out forever from members' minds. It was a mistake. It was wrong, plain and simple.

Boyd K. Packer Talk Highlights
What I did for the late L. Tom Perry, I do for the late Boyd K. Packer, who died on Friday. Packer was 90; he'd been an Apostle since 1970. With his passing, there is now 21 years that separate Pres. Monson from the next senior Apostle - Russell M. Nelson. Nelson is actually three years older than Pres. Monson, but he was called to be an Apostle in 1984; Monson in 1963.
Packer was known for being willing to speak frankly, boldly, and not without controversy. Here's some highlights from random talks of his through the years.
The first comes from the october 1971 General Conference.
"The Only True and Living Church"
The position that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the only true church upon the face of the earth is fundamental. Perhaps it would be more convenient and palatable and popular if we were to avoid it; nevertheless, we are under a sacred obligation and a sacred trust to hold to it. It is not merely an admission; it is a positive declaration. It is so fundamental that we cannot yield on this point.
Now to those who think us uncharitable, we say that it was not devised by us; it was declared by Him, for he gave commandments to the early brethren, and I quote:
“… to lay the foundation of this church, and to bring it forth out of obscurity and out of darkness, the only true and living church upon the face of the whole earth, with which I, the Lord, am well pleased, speaking unto the church collectively and not individually.” (D&C 1:30.)
Now this is not to say that the churches, all of them, are without some truth. They have some truth—some of them very much of it. They have a form of godliness. Often the clergy and adherents are not without dedication, and many of them practice remarkably well the virtues of Christianity. They are, nonetheless, incomplete...
Now in these last days when the consummate power of evil moves against us, the great apostasy spoken of in the scriptures moves to its inevitable conclusion. The Christian churches that should be the bulwark against it seem to provide little substance for their members or for their clergy. And we see the frightening specter of empty churches and a clergy promoting causes they, above all, should resist...

From April 1978:
"Solving Emotional Problem's in the Lord's Own Way"
We have become very anxious over the amount of counseling that we seem to need in the Church. Our members are becoming dependent.
We must not set up a network of counseling services without at the same time emphasizing the principle of emotional self-reliance and individual independence.
If we lose our emotional and spiritual independence, our self-reliance, we can be weakened quite as much, perhaps even more, than when we become dependent materially...
If you find a case where professional help is justified, be very careful.
There are some spiritually destructive techniques used in the field of counseling. When you entrust your members to others, do not let them be subject to these things. Solve problems in the Lord’s way.
Some counselors want to delve deeper than is emotionally or spiritually healthy. They sometimes want to draw out and analyze and take apart and dissect.
While a certain amount of catharsis may be healthy, overmuch of it can be degenerating. It is seldom as easy to put something back together as it is to take it apart.
By probing too deeply, or talking endlessly about some problems, we can foolishly cause the very thing we are trying to prevent.

From April 1988:
"Atonement, Agency, Accountability"
Before the Crucifixion and afterward, many men have willingly given their lives in selfless acts of heroism. But none faced what the Christ endured. Upon Him was the burden of all human transgression, all human guilt.
And hanging in the balance was the Atonement. Through His willing act, mercy and justice could be reconciled, eternal law sustained, and that mediation achieved without which mortal man could not be redeemed.
He, by choice, accepted the penalty for all mankind for the sum total of all wickedness and depravity; for brutality, immorality, perversion, and corruption; for addiction; for the killings and torture and terror—for all of it that ever had been or all that ever would be enacted upon this earth...
I cannot with composure tell you how I feel about the Atonement. It touches the deepest emotion of gratitude and obligation. My soul reaches after Him who wrought it, this Christ, our Savior of whom I am a witness. I testify of Him. He is our Lord, our Redeemer, our advocate with the Father. He ransomed us with His blood.
Humbly I lay claim upon the atonement of Christ. I find no shame in kneeling down in worship of our Father and His son.

After six prominent Mormon intellectuals were excommunicated in September - they came to be known as the September Six - most of them said they knew Elder Packer was the one who orchestrated their excommunications. This was his first General Conference talk after the September Six.
"For Time and All Eternity"
All virtues listed in the scriptures—love, joy, peace, faith, godliness, charity—are shared by both men and women, and the highest priesthood ordinance in mortality is given only to man and woman together.
After the Fall, natural law had far-reaching sovereignty over mortal birth. There are what President J. Reuben Clark, Jr., called “pranks” of nature, which cause a variety of abnormalities, deficiencies, and deformities. However unfair they seem to man’s way of reasoning, they somehow suit the purposes of the Lord in the proving of mankind.
The following of every worthy instinct, the responding to every righteous urge, the consummating of every exalting human relationship are provided for and approved in the doctrines of the gospel of Jesus Christ and protected by commandments revealed to His church.
Except Adam and Eve by nature be different from one another, they could not multiply and fill the earth. The complementing differences are the very key to the plan of happiness.
Some roles are best suited to the masculine nature and others to the feminine nature. Both the scriptures and the patterns of nature place man as the protector, the provider.
Those responsibilities of the priesthood, which have to do with the administration of the Church, of necessity function outside the home. By divine decree, they have been entrusted to men. It has been that way since the beginning, for the Lord revealed that “the order of this priesthood was confirmed to be handed down from father to son. … This order was instituted in the days of Adam.”
A man who holds the priesthood does not have an advantage over a woman in qualifying for exaltation. The woman, by her very nature, is also co-creator with God and the primary nurturer of the children. Virtues and attributes upon which perfection and exaltation depend come naturally to a woman and are refined through marriage and motherhood.
The priesthood is conferred only upon worthy men in order to conform to our Father’s plan of happiness. With the laws of nature and the revealed word of God working in harmony, it simply works best that way...
I close with a parable.
Once a man received as his inheritance two keys. The first key, he was told, would open a vault which he must protect at all cost. The second key was to a safe within the vault which contained a priceless treasure. He was to open this safe and freely use the precious things which were stored therein. He was warned that many would seek to rob him of his inheritance. He was promised that if he used the treasure worthily, it would be replenished and never be diminished, not in all eternity. He would be tested. If he used it to benefit others, his own blessings and joy would increase.
The man went alone to the vault. His first key opened the door. He tried to unlock the treasure with the other key, but he could not, for there were two locks on the safe. His key alone would not open it. No matter how he tried, he could not open it. He was puzzled. He had been given the keys. He knew the treasure was rightfully his. He had obeyed instructions, but he could not open the safe.
In due time, there came a woman into the vault. She, too, held a key. It was noticeably different from the key he held. Her key fit the other lock. It humbled him to learn that he could not obtain his rightful inheritance without her.
They made a covenant that together they would open the treasure and, as instructed, he would watch over the vault and protect it; she would watch over the treasure. She was not concerned that, as guardian of the vault, he held two keys, for his full purpose was to see that she was safe as she watched over that which was most precious to them both. Together they opened the safe and partook of their inheritance. They rejoiced for, as promised, it replenished itself.
With great joy they found that they could pass the treasure on to their children; each could receive a full measure, undiminished to the last generation.
Perhaps some few of their posterity would not find a companion who possessed the complementary key, or one worthy and willing to keep the covenants relating to the treasure. Nevertheless, if they kept the commandments, they would not be denied even the smallest blessing.
Because some tempted them to misuse their treasure, they were careful to teach their children about keys and covenants.
There came, in due time, among their posterity some few who were deceived or jealous or selfish because one was given two keys and another only one. “Why,” the selfish ones reasoned, “cannot the treasure be mine alone to use as I desire?”
Some tried to reshape the key they had been given to resemble the other key. Perhaps, they thought, it would then fit both locks. And so it was that the safe was closed to them. Their reshaped keys were useless, and their inheritance was lost.
Those who received the treasure with gratitude and obeyed the laws concerning it knew joy without bounds through time and all eternity.
----
From April 2008, the first talk by Packer after Pres. Monson was sustained as the new President of the Church.
"The Twelve"
President Monson was specifically given the authority to exercise all of the priesthood keys of authority. Now, as the scriptures provide, he is the only man on the earth who has the right to exercise all of the keys. But we all hold them as Apostles. There is one man among us called and ordained, and he becomes the President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Already he was and had been sustained for years as a prophet, seer, and revelator...
We do not hear of the priesthood keys being exercised in other Christian churches. It seems odd that we are described by some as being non-Christian when we are the only ones who have the authority and the organization that He established.
The present Twelve are very ordinary people. They are not, as the original Twelve were not, spectacular individually, but collectively the Twelve are a power...
We now have means by which we can teach and testify to leaders and members all over the world electronically. But in order to confer the keys of authority in that unbroken line upon the priesthood leaders, “by the laying on of hands,” wherever they are in the world, one of us must be there every time.
The Lord said, “And again, I say unto you, that whosoever ye shall send in my name, by the voice of your brethren, the Twelve, duly recommended and authorized by you, shall have power to open the door of my kingdom unto any nation whithersoever ye shall send them.”
The scriptures describe the Twelve as “traveling councilors.”
I am no different from the Brethren of the Twelve and the Seventy and the Bishopric with whom I have served for these 47 years when I tell you that the records show I have been in Mexico and Central and South America more than 75 times, in Europe over 50 times, Canada 25 times, the islands of the Pacific 10 times, Asia 10 times, and Africa 4 times; also China twice; to Israel, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the Dominican Republic, India, Pakistan, Egypt, Indonesia, and many, many other places around the globe. Others have traveled even more than that.
While the Apostles hold all of the priesthood keys, all leaders and members alike may receive personal revelation. Indeed, they are expected to seek it through prayer and to act on it by faith...
Now Elder Christofferson may wonder, as I did, why one such as I should be ordained to the holy apostleship.
There are many qualifications that I lack. There is so much in my effort to serve that is wanting. There is only one single thing, one qualification that can explain it. Like Peter and all of those who have since been ordained, I have that witness.
I know that God is our Father. He introduced His Son, Jesus Christ, to Joseph Smith. I declare to you that I know that Jesus is the Christ. I know that He lives. He was born in the meridian of time. He taught His gospel and was tried. He suffered and was crucified and resurrected on the third day. He, like His Father, has a body of flesh and bone. He made His Atonement. Of Him I bear witness. Of Him I am a witness. This I bear in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.
Packer was known for being willing to speak frankly, boldly, and not without controversy. Here's some highlights from random talks of his through the years.

Of Him I am a witness. This I bear in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

L. Tom Perry Talk Highlights
L. Tom Perry was an Apostle for over 40 years before his passing at age 92. I wanted to find some random highlights from his talks over the years to spotlight his messages and ministry.
----
One of his earliest General Conference talks after his calling as an Apostle came in October 1975, when he was pondering religious freedom on the approach of the Bicentennial celebration of the USA.
"For the Time Will Come When They Will Not Endure Sound Doctrine"
I will develop within me the courage to stand up and defend that which I believe to be right. I will declare my personal witness that the heavens are not closed. The Lord continues to guide and direct all of his children on earth if they will but heed his voice. I will teach my firm conviction that the foundation of any righteous government is the law that has been received from the Lord to guide and direct man’s efforts. Righteous government receives direction from the Lord...
Second, I want to publicly profess my opposition to those who are so caught up in their own learning they believe with their enlightened minds they can change the laws of God. A consensus of mankind is not and never will be impowered to change these divine laws.
Let me cite just one example of how these seemingly enlightened minds are trying to destroy the sacred institution of marriage with their erroneous doctrines and teachings. A quotation from a recent publication, which is just one of many I have recently received from concerned citizens, is as follows:
“On the basis of this and other such evidence, some observers suggest that the institution of marriage which had necessarily been changed over the centuries to accommodate the needs of a changing society now faces a future in which it may gradually become obsolete. In their judgment, marriage will ultimately manifest itself, not as a religious sacrament or a legal certification but simply as a sociological fact.” (William H. Masters and Virginia E. Johnson, The Pleasure Bond, Toronto and Boston, Little, Brown and Co., p. 179.) They are calling for a new Christian approach to marriage. They state that dogmatism is being forced to yield to humanism no matter how slowly or how grudgingly. They call attention to studies they claim are on the verge of revealing with assurance that having extramarital relations may serve as a vehicle to faithfulness to God.
I find that such teachings are absolutely contrary to the instructions of the Lord to mankind. As I examine the physical order in the Lord’s divine plan, I find no evidence that he has ever found it necessary to make a correction. The earth continues to rotate in the same direction. The angle of its axis is unchanged. The circulation of moisture continues from sea to cloud to earth to river to sea with its same beneficial effect without alteration.
I find the same consistency in the divine law he has established for mankind...
The union between husband and wife is sacred to the Lord, something not to be trifled with. The marriage covenant was essential to the Lord God to accomplish his mission and purposes for which he created the heavens and the earth.
In all periods of time, he has declared his divine law is to safeguard and protect this holy union between husband and wife. When Moses found need for laws to govern the children of Israel, one of the pronouncements by the Lord to him was, “Thou shalt not commit adultery.” (Ex. 20:14.)
----
I found it interesting how forty years ago he was still giving talks on the family, but his fear then was adultery. Next, from October 1983:
"Our Father Who Art in Heaven"
As I have opportunity of kneeling each night and morning with my wife in prayer, I am full of gratitude for the blessing and privilege of having her companionship. I am full of gratitude for the blessings that come to me through my children and their lives as I am able to be with them and watch their growth and progress.
When you are on your knees in prayer, there is an overwhelming feeling of gratitude to the Lord for the many blessings that he bestows on his children.
How blessed we are for our understanding of who He is. How blessed we are as a people for the gift of the gospel. I marvel at what He has created for our use and benefit and for the privilege of enjoying this earthly experience. My heart is especially filled with gratitude at this season of the harvest when I go out to dig a hill of potatoes and there find manyfold over the small piece I planted a few months before, or pull off an ear of corn and see how those two or three kernels placed in the earth now yield a hundredfold. As I travel and see the beauty of His creations—the mountains, the fertile plains, the sparkling streams, or the mighty oceans—how grateful I am for His blessings to me. When we kneel in family prayer, let us teach our children to express gratitude unto the Lord for His many blessings to us.

This is from April 1995, the first Conference after Gordon B. Hinckley had been called as the new President of the Church.
"An Elect Lady"
No single issue causes more concern among the leaders of churches and the leaders of nations than the alarming rate of breakup of marriages today. Statistics show that strong marriages produce strong families. The breakup of the family is causing serious social problems that are destroying our communities—including increases in poverty, crime, and delinquency.
The union between husband and wife is not something to be trifled with. The marriage covenant is essential for the Lord to accomplish His divine purposes. Consistently the Lord has declared that His divine laws were instituted to safeguard and protect the holy union between husband and wife...
Much will be said, written, and recorded about President Hinckley during the time he presides over the Church. Much less will be recorded about his dear companion, Marjorie. For you who have not had the opportunity of meeting Sister Hinckley, I would like to tell you something about her. What an example she has been and will continue to be to the women of the Church and to all the world. She is such a loyal, supportive companion to our President...
What an example she is to the wives of priesthood leaders all over the world!
With all of the pressures of Church service thrust on the Hinckley family, Sister Hinckley has always maintained a balance between her two eternal callings—those of wife and mother. Her success in the role as a mother is evidenced by the Hinckley children—Dick, Clark, Kathleen, Virginia, and Jane. Each child is a credit to their parents.
Sister Hinckley has said this about motherhood:
“It is the mothers of young children I would like to address first. These are golden years for you. These are years when you will probably do the most important work of your lives. Don’t wish away your years of caring for small children. Life is what happens to you while you are making other plans. This is a time of great opportunity for you to build the kingdom. When you teach children to love their Heavenly Father, you have done one of the greatest things you will ever do. If you can be a full-time homemaker, be grateful. If not, you must do what is best for you. I for one have never felt a need to apologize for my role as a full-time homemaker."

From October 2006:
"The Plan of Salvation"
Many people wonder, “Where did we come from? Why are we here? Where are we going?” Our Eternal Father did not send us to earth on an aimless, meaningless journey. He provided for us a plan to follow. He is the author of that plan. It is designed for man’s progress and ultimate salvation and exaltation...
many people in the world today continue to struggle to find answers to life’s most basic questions. The cries of “Lo, here” and “Lo, there” only grow louder and many, many times more confusing. Technology has multiplied the confusion by spreading these messages throughout the airwaves and across the massive amounts of cable lines that now cover the earth. There are so many avenues to broadcast more and more different messages, I guess it should not be surprising that people are confused. Centuries ago Paul predicted:
“The time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
“And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables” (2 Timothy 4:3–4).
We need not be confused. The answers to the puzzling questions regarding the purpose of life have again been given to mankind for our guidance...
God sent His Beloved Son to overcome the Fall of Adam and Eve. He came to earth as our Savior and Redeemer. He overcame the obstacle of physical death for us by giving up His own life. When He died on the cross, His spirit became separated from His body. On the third day His spirit and His body were reunited eternally, never to be separated again.
Life on earth is of limited duration. There comes a time for all of us when the spirit and the body are separated in death. But because of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, we will all be resurrected, regardless of whether we have accomplished good or evil in this life. Immortality is the gift to every mortal child of our Father in Heaven. Death must be viewed as a portal to a new and better life. Through the glorious resurrection, body and spirit will be reunited. We will have a perfect, immortal body of flesh and bones that will never be subjected to pain or death.

Joseph F. Smith's Testimony During Reed Smoot Hearing - Some Highlights
I've never read the actual testimony of Pres. Joseph F. Smith when he was made to appear before the U.S. Senate in 1904, during the Reed Smoot hearing. Here were some interesting points I found:
On his business holdings:
Mr. TAYLER. What is your business ?
Mr. SMITH. My principal business is that of president of the church.
Mr. TAYLER. In what other business are you engaged?
Mr. SMITH. I am engaged in numerous other businesses.
Mr. TAYLER. What?
Mr. SMITH. I am president of Zion's Cooperative Mercantile Institution.
Mr. TAYLER. What kind of an institution is that?
Mr. SMITH. A mercantile institution.
Mr. TAYLER. Has it a capital stock?
Mr. SMITH. It has.
Mr. TAYLER. How large ?
Mr. SMITH. I think it is a little over a million.
Mr. TAYLER. Without having time to go into it, is that corporation, through its directorate, controlled by officers of the church?
Mr. SMITH. No, sir; it is controlled by directors.
Mr. TAYLER. Yes. I am not speaking of any churchly control of it, but I mean are the directors or a majority of them officers also in the church, just as you are an official and a director?
Mr. SMITH. I hardly think a majority of them are officials of the church.
Mr. TAYLER. Of what other corporations are you an officer ?
Mr. SMITH. I am president of the State Bank of Utah, another institution.
Mr. TAYLER. What else ?
Mr. SMITH. Zion Savings Bank and Trust Company.
Mr. TAYLER. What else?
Mr. SMITH. I am president of the Utah Sugar Company.
Mr. TAYLER. What else?
Mr. SMITH. I am president of the Consolidated Wagon and Machine Company.
Mr. TAYLER. What else ?
Mr. SMITH. There are several other small institutions with which I am associated.
Mr. TAYLER. Are you associated with the Utah Light and Power Company ?
Mr. SMITH. I am.
Mr. TAYLER. In what capacity ?
Mr. SMITH. I am a director and president of the company.
Mr. TAYLER. A director and the president?
Mr. SMITH. Yes, sir.
Mr. TAYLER. Had you that in mind when you classified the others as small concerns ?
Mr. SMITH. No, sir; I had not that in mind.
Mr. TAYLER. That is a large concern?
Mr. SMITH. That is a large concern.
Mr. TAYLER. Are you an officer of the Salt Lake and Los Angeles Railroad Company?
Mr. SMITH. I am.
Mr. TAYLER. What?
Mr. SMITH. President and director.
Mr. TAYLER. That is a large concern ?
Mr. SMITH. No, sir; it is a very small concern.
Mr. TAYLER. Of what else are you president ?
Mr. SMITH. I am president of the Salt Air Beach Company.
Mr. TAYLER. The Salt Air Beach Company?
Mr. SMITH. Yes, sir.
Mr. TAYLER. What else, if you can recall?
Mr. SMITH. I do not recall just now.
Mr. TAYLER. What relation do you sustain to the Consolidated Light and Power Company ?
Mr. SMITH. That is the same institution that you have mentioned, sir the Consolidated Light and Power Company. That is now consolidated. It is the Utah Light and Railroad Company now.
Mr. TAYLER. The Utah Light and Railroad Company ?
Mr. SMITH. The Utah Light and Power Company is the same thing-
Mr. TAYLER. They have been consolidated into the Light and Power Company ?
Mr. SMITH. No, sir; the Consolidated Light and Railway Company.
Mr. TAYLER. The Consolidated Light and Railway Company ?
Mr. SMITH. Yes, sir.
Mr. TAYLER. Do those corporations furnish the electric light and urban traction in the city of Salt Lake?
Mr. SMITH. Yes, sir.
Mr. TAYLER. Altogether?
Mr. SMITH. I believe they do.
Mr. TAYLER. What relation do yon sustain to the Idaho Sugar Company ?
Mr. SMITH. I am a director of that company and also the president of it.
Mr. TAYLER. Of the Inland Crystal Salt Company ?
Mr. SMITH. Also the same position there.
Mr. TAYLER. The Salt Lake Dramatic Association?
Mr. SMITH. I am president of that and also a director.
Mr. TAYLER. Are you president of any other corporation there?
Mr. SMITH. I do not know. Perhaps you can tell me. I do not remember any more just now.
Mr. TAYLER. It would seem that the number has grown so large that it would be an undue tax upon your memory to charge you with naming them all.
Mr. SMITH. It is rather sudden and unexpected to me. I perhaps might have prepared myself for it.
Mr. TAYLER. What relation do you sustain to the Salt Lake Knitting Company? Did I ask you about it?
Mr. SMITH. No, sir; you did not.
Mr. TAYLER. The Salt Lake Knitting Company ?
Mr. SMITH. I am president of it, and also a director.
On whether apostles are called by revelation:
Mr. SMITH. In the first place they were chosen by revelation. The council of the apostles have had a voice ever since in the selection of their successors.
Senator McCoMAS. Had a voice?
Mr. SMITH. Yes, sir.
Senator McCoMAS. Have they had the election of their successors to perpetuate the body of apostles since the first revelation ?
Mr. SMITH. I do not know that I understand your question.
Senator McCoMAS. You say the first apostles were selected in accordance with revelations.
Mr. SMITH. Yes, sir.
Senator McCoMAS. Revelations to whom ?
Mr. SMITH. To Joseph Smith.
Senator McCoMAS. And the twelve apostles were then first named ?
Mr. SMITH. Yes, sir.
Senator McCoMAS. When vacancies occurred thereafter, by what body were the vacancies in the twelve apostles filled?
Mr. SMITH. Perhaps I may say in this way: Chosen by the body, the twelve themselves, by and with the consent and approval of the first presidency.
Senator HOAB. Was there a revelation in regard to each of them?
Mr. SMITH. No, sir; not in regard to each of them. Do you mean in the beginning?
Senator HOAR. I understand you to say that the original twelve apostles were selected by revelation ?
Mr. SMITH. Yes, sir.
Senator HOAR. Through Joseph Smith ?
Mr. SMITH. Yes, sir; that is right.
Senator HOAR. Is there any revelation in regard to the subsequent ones?
Mr. SMITH. No, sir; it has been the choice of the body.
Senator McCoMAS. Then the apostles are perpetuated in succession by their own act and the approval of the first presidency ?
Mr. SMITH. That is right.
On whether he receives revelation as President of the Church:
Senator HOAR. Does or does not a person who does not believe that a revelation given through the head of the church comes from God reject a fundamental principle of Mormonism?
Mr. SMITH. He does; always if the revelation is a divine revelation from God.
Senator HOAR. It always is, is it not? It comes through the head of the church?
Mr. SMITH. When it is divine, it always is; when it is divine, most decidedly.
The CHAIRMAN. I do not quite understand that "when it is divine." You have revelations, have you not?
Mr. SMITH. I have never pretended to nor do I profess to have received revelations. I never said I had a revelaton except so far as God has shown to me that so-called Mormonism is God's divine truth; that is all.
and later...
Senator DUBOIS. Have you received any individual revelations yourself, since you became president of the church under your own definition, even, of a revelation?
Mr. SMITH. I can not say that I have.
Senator DUBOIS. Can you say that you have not?
Mr. SMITH. No; I can not say that I have not.
Senator DUBOIS. Then you do not know whether you have received any such revelation as you have described, or whether you have not?
Mr. SMITH. Well, I can say this: That if I live as I should in the line of my duties, I am susceptible, I think, of the impressions of the spirit of the Lord upon my mind at any time, just as any good Methodist or any other good church member might be. And so far as that is concerned, I say yes; I have had impressions of the Spirit upon my mind very frequently, but they are not in the sense revelations.
The CHAIRMAN. Senator, do you think it is important to pursue that further?
Senator DUBOIS. No.
On how long plural marriages were performed:
Mr. TAYLER. That is to say, no plural marriages were solemnized in the church after October, 1878?
Mr. SMITH. No; I can not say as to that.
Mr. TAYLER. Well, if the church solemnized marriages after that time it did not accept that decision as conclusive upon it, did it?
Mr. SMITH. 1 am not aware that the church practiced polygamy, or plural marriages, at least, after the manifesto.
Mr. TAYLER. Yes, I know; but that was a long, long time after that. 1 am speaking now of 1878, when the Supreme Court decided the law to be constitutional.
Mr. SMITH. I will say this, Mr. Chairman, that I do not know of any marriages occurring after that decision.
On D&C 132:
Mr. TAYLEK. The next verse.
Mr. SMITH. All right.
"64. And again, verily, verily I say unto you, if any man have a wife, who holds the keys of this power, and he teaches unto her the law of my Priesthood, as pertaining to these things, then shall she believe, and administer unto him, or she shall be destroyed, saith the Lord your God, for I will destroy her; for I will magnify my name upon all those who receive and abide in my law."
Senator PETTUS. Now , what is the meaning of the word "destroyed," there, as interpreted by the church ?
Mr. SMITH. I have no conception of the meaning of it more than the language itself conveys, that the woman who disobeys is in the hands of the Lord for Him to deal with as He may deem proper. I suppose that is what it means.
Senator FORAKER. Has the church ever construed that language to give authority to it as a church to destroy the woman ?
Mr. SMITH. Never in the world. It is not so stated. It is that the Lord
Senator FORAKER. The church construes it, as 'I understand, to mean that she is in the hands of the Lord, to be destroyed by the Lord.
Mr. SMITH. By the Lord, if there is any destruction at all.
Senator PETTUS. Have there ever been in the past plural marriages without the consent of the first wife?
Mr. SMITH. I do not know of any, unless it may have been Joseph Smith himself.
Senator PETTUS. Is the language that you have read construed to mean that she is bound to consent?
Mr. SMITH. The condition is that if she does not consent the Lord will destroy her, but I do not know how He will do it.
Senator BAILEY. Is it riot true that in the very next verse, if she refuses her consent her husband is exempt from the law which requires her consent ?
Mr. SMITH. Yes; he is exempt from the law which requires her consent.
Senator BAILEY. She is commanded to consent, but if she does not, then he is exempt from the requirement?
Mr. SMITH. Then he is at liberty to proceed without her consent, under the law.
Senator BEVERIDGE. In other words, her consent amounts to nothing ?
Mr. SMITH. It amounts to nothing but her consent.
On his business holdings:
Mr. TAYLER. What is your business ?
Mr. SMITH. My principal business is that of president of the church.
Mr. TAYLER. In what other business are you engaged?
Mr. SMITH. I am engaged in numerous other businesses.
Mr. TAYLER. What?
Mr. SMITH. I am president of Zion's Cooperative Mercantile Institution.
Mr. TAYLER. What kind of an institution is that?
Mr. SMITH. A mercantile institution.

Mr.

(Invocation given)
Dallin H Oaks:
“My dear brothers and sisters, we greet you here, and at the other buildings, to which this is being broadcast. We are thrilled to be with you. Richard E Turley Jr. and I are pleased to be with you tonight. The purpose of our message is to answer some faithful questions and to minister to some disabling doubts. We do this under this title of our message, ‘Who’s on the Lord’s Side?’
In determining on who’s on the Lord’s side on these latter-days, there are two major questions. First, for most non-Mormons, and for some Mormons, the key question is how they feel about Joseph Smith and the Book of Mormon. For most Mormons, the key question on who’s on the Lord’s side is how they feel about the church’s current prophetic leadership. If those feelings are sufficiently negative, they take members into what we call apostasy.
We will speak of each of these two questions. First, Brother Turley will speak about Joseph Smith and the Book of Mormon.”
Richard E Turley Jr.:
Twenty-nine years ago, when I was twenty-nine years old, I received a call in my law office from Elder Dallin H Oaks of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, invited me to lunch, and that interview led to others, at the end of which, I was invited to give up my law practice and devote my full time to the history of the church. By that time, I had already spent about half my life immersed in the church’s history, and so, as you might imagine, I was quite intrigued when offered the keys and combinations to the church’s historical treasures and told that I was responsible for them. It was a rare privilege to be able to access all of those treasures, whenever I wished, and to be able to hold them, read them, and study them to my heart’s intent. For the last three decades, I have been doing exactly that, as well as traveling the world in the interest of church history.
The 69th section of the Doctrine and Covenants directs that the church historian, quote ‘travel many times from place to place and church to church’ or, as we might say, travel from church unit to church unit, ‘that he may more easily obtain knowledge’.
As I have traveled in North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, and the Isles of the Sea, I have frequently participated in Question and Answer Sessions. More than once, I have been asked by church members questions like the following:
‘With your access to all the historical treasures of the church, what is the single most remarkable item that you have seen in your study of church history?’
And to that question, I have uniformly answered the Original Manuscript of the Book of Mormon. For the next few minutes, I would like to talk to you about this important manuscript.
When Joseph Smith received the gold plates from the angel Moroni, early on the morning of September 22, 1827, he received also a sacred commission. Joseph later wrote, ‘the heavenly messenger delivered them up to me with this charge: that I should be responsible for them. That if I should let them go carelessly, or through any other neglect in mind, I should be cut off. But then if I abuse all of my endeavors until he, the messenger, should call for them, they should be protected.’
Those of us who have studied church history realize that part of the four year period in which Moroni instructed Joseph about the plates before delivering them to him, was to go into teaching him lessons about treating the plates as a sacred record and not as an asset to be used for the purposes of lifting his family sometimes crushing poverty. To protect the plates, when he first received them, Joseph hid them in a hollow log. Later, he went back to retrieve them so he could carry them back to his home. At the time, others had inferred that he had had the plates, and you realize there might be danger in traveling with the record too close to the public roads. Instead, he walked home through the woods, avoiding prying eyes. If you have spent time in upstate New York, as I have, you can imagine what it was like to carry the plates home through the trees and fields between the Hill Cumorah and the Smith Family Home. As Joseph walked through the early fall weather, leaves crunched under his feat as the smells and sounds of the forest surrounded him.
During his homeward journey, Joseph came to a fallen log and began to step over it when, suddenly, a man leaped from behind the log and struck him in an effort to rob him of the plates. Joseph defended himself and then began running, only to be attacked twice more before reaching home with the heavy plates, as well as a thumb that was dislocated in the melee. This was just one of many experiences Joseph Smith had in trying to protect the plates and what they contain. Once he had completed the translation of the Book of Mormon, he did not want to lose the original manuscript of that translation. The previous year, when the 116 pages disappeared, Joseph learned the lesson that all of us with computers learn, which is back-up, back-up, back-up.
After completing the rest of the translation in 1829, Joseph returned to his home in Harmony, Pennsylvania to be with his wife, Emma, and her family there, and he had trusted the process of making a backup copy to his brother Hyrum Smith and their colleague Oliver Cowdery, who had served for most of the original manuscript of the Book of Mormon as the scribe. These two men dutifully made a backup copy that we today call the Printer’s Manuscript, and they preserve the original dictation copy very carefully. Eventually, they returned that original copy to Joseph Smith, and he kept it in his possession. In 1840, after keeping it for many years, when he was working on the third edition of the Book of Mormon, he used it to proofread the printed text. Then the following year, in 1841, the church was building the Nauvoo House, which is described in the 124th section of the Doctrine and Covenants. During the construction of the Nauvoo House, Joseph Smith took the original manuscript of the Book of Mormon, that he had been safeguarding so carefully, and he put it in the cornerstone of that building.
Brothers and Sisters I’ve thought many times about his decision to put the original manuscript into the cornerstone. ‘Why would he do that?’ I’ve asked myself.
The question, after some thought, should be obvious to most of us. He got the gold plates from a stone box, and so it made sense that, wanting to protect the original manuscript, he would put it into a stone box. After he put the manuscript into the cornerstone of the Nauvoo House, the builders sealed up the box and began laying bricks on top of it as they continued the construction process, and that was the last time Joseph Smith ever saw the manuscript.
Three years later, in 1844, Joseph was martyred in Carthage, Illinois. The decades passed and, in 1879, his wife, Emma, also passed away. Three years later, Emma’s second husband, Lewis Bidamon, decided to do something with the never-completed Nauvoo House. And so, he tore down the southeast portion of the building and used the materials that he salvaged to complete a structure on the north end. During the demolition, he came to the cornerstone and opened it, and there inside laid the original manuscript of the Book of Mormon. Now, gold plates do very well for hundreds of years in a stone box. But the same is not true for paper.
With the high humidity in Nauvoo, the high water table there, and flooding on the Mississippi river, which is adjacent to the Nauvoo House, water had seeped into the cornerstone and much of the manuscript was soaked. Lewis Bidamon took out the soggy manuscript, carried it home, and dried it out. Then, over the course of the next few years, as visitors came to Nauvoo, he gave away portions of the manuscript as souvenirs. Gratefully, many of the people who received those portions were members of our church and between 1882, when Lewis first opened the box, and the 1930’s, nearly all of the known surviving large portions of the manuscript made their way to the Church Historian’s Office in Salt Lake City. Today, there are also a few of the smaller fragments of the manuscript in other locations.
The bottom line is this: we can study the Book of Mormon manuscript today because we have it. Over the last 30 years, I have looked at it again and again. I want to tell you something about that manuscript and how it relates to our covenant obligation as church members to remember and follow the savior. We have on display in the Church History Library in Salt Lake City a page of the original manuscript of the Book of Mormon for all to see. If you can’t make it to Salt Lake, you can also see this page in an online exhibit that we call ‘Foundations of Faith.’ By the way, as part of the Joseph Smith Papers Project, we will be publishing all of the surviving portions of the original manuscript for the whole world to see, just as we are publishing the other documents in which Joseph Smith had a major role.
If you look at the original manuscript of the Book of Mormon, you will see that the text moves smoothly from one line to the next with very little punctuation and very few corrections, just a steady flow of text from one line to another. Clearly, you can tell, as you study the manuscript, that the prophet was dictating as the scribe took down his words. Now that might not sound very remarkable to you, but I want you to think about something: if you’ve read the Book of Mormon, you know that it has a complex set of characters, a complex geography, a complex chronology, and a complex narrative with threads that intertwine. And of course, it contains a very rich treasure of theological truth.
I have a doctorate level of education, and I write books. I have computers to help me, I have a staff to assist me, and, with all of that, it still takes numerous drafts and often several years for me to write a significant book. Now realize this: The Book of Mormon, essentially as we have it today, was dictated by the prophet Joseph Smith, a man with perhaps one year of formal education, in just a single draft over a period of less than 90 days. Brothers and Sisters, I don’t care how smart you are, I don’t care how much education you have or how good you are as a writer. I defy anyone to sit down and, in just one draft, dictate in a period of ninety days or less, a book of the power and complexity of the Book of Mormon.
I’ll come back to that in a minute because I want to contrast it with another artifact we have on display at the Church history library and on our Joseph Smith Paper’s website. But first I’ll have to mention something else. A lot of people have asked, ‘when Joseph Smith had his first vision, when Moroni first visited him, and when he translated the Book of Mormon, why didn’t he write these experiences down at the time?’ The answer is really quite simple. He hardly wrote anything down at the time. He and his family were not a record-keeping people.
As I mentioned earlier, I have traveled around the globe. In the process, I have met people in many parts of the world who rely on an oral tradition for their history instead of writing. Joseph Smith’s family was literate, but it was largely a family of oral tradition. So far as we can tell from the historical record, Joseph Smith and his family members didn’t write a lot of things down in those early days. But when the church was legally organized on April the 6th, 1830, the Lord gave a commandment to the prophet Joseph Smith to keep a record. That commandment, now in section 21 of the Doctrine and Covenants, reads, ‘Behold, there shall be a record kept among you.’
These words are so important that we have them written on the wall in the Church History Library. Joseph Smith struggled with this commandment to keep a record. He knew he was supposed to do so, but he didn’t like to write. It was hard for him. He wasn’t very good at it. Finally, on November the 27th, 1832, two and a half years after the church was organized, Joseph Smith sat down to write his very first journal entry. That journal entry is also on display right now in the Church History Library, online with our Foundations of Faith exhibit, and also on the Joseph Smith Papers website. I want to read to you briefly what this very first journal entry says.
You can imagine that Joseph wanting to keep this commandment to keep a record, sits down. He’s purchased a new little notebook, he gets his ink and his quill pen and he dips the pen in the ink and begins to write, and this is what he wrote: ‘Joseph Smith Jr.’s record book bought for to note all the minute circumstances that comes under my observation.’
I have a degree in English, and I’ll tell you that this in not an especially good sentence. Joseph recognized that fact, too, and, as you can see in the slide, he crossed it out. He dipped his pen and started again. This time, he tried to write essentially the same content, but he wanted to flower it up a bit. So he writes, ‘Joseph Smith Jrs book for record bought on the 27th November, 1832 for the purpose to keep a minute account of all things that come under my observation etc.’ A valiant effort but still, frankly, not very good.
He concludes the journal entry that day by writing very humbly, ‘may God grant that I be directed in all my thoughts. Oh blessed thy servant. Amen.’ Overall, this humble journal entry is not very good from the standpoint of writing. A third of it is even crossed out, but consider this. This awkward first journal entry of Joseph Smith was written three and a half years after Joseph completed the translation of the Book of Mormon. Contrast Joseph the man, writing this journal entry, to Joseph the seer, dictating the Book of Mormon. With the 1832 journal entry, Joseph struggled to write a single page of text. But with the 1829 Book of Mormon manuscript, Joseph rapidly dictated what became a 588 page printed book in a single draft over a period of less than 90 days. The only way that was possible, Brothers and Sisters, is in the way he said he did it, which is by the gift and power of The Lord and his servants went through a lot of trouble over thousands of years to preserve the various records that make up the Book of Mormon so Joseph Smith could translate the book for our day. Have you ever stopped to think about how important the Book of Mormon is in testifying of our Lord Jesus Christ? In 1982, the Church added a subtitle to the Book of Mormon, ‘Another Testament of Jesus Christ.’ The Book of Mormon testifies of Jesus Christ and the covenants that he makes with his people. Hence, it is a testament, just as the Old Testament and the New Testament were about the Old covenant and the New covenant that we find in the Book of Mormon.
Each week in sacrament meeting, we partake of the emblems of the Lord’s atoning sacrifice and we covenant to remember the Lord Jesus Christ always. The word ‘remember’ appears in the scriptures more than 200 times and the word ‘forget’ also appears dozens of times. Clearly, as human beings, we risk forgetting the Lord. The Book of Mormon, the Old Testament, and the New Testament contain case after case of people making covenants and then forgetting them. Regular meeting with the Book of Mormon will help us always remember him. It will testify of him in powerful ways. Let me give you just one example:
When I was a third-year law student at BYU, I was taken a full load of difficult law classes. I was serving as the executive editor of the Law Review at the time, which will not mean a whole lot to most of you but it means I was very, very busy. At the time, I was also the Elders Quorum President in my BYU student ward, which requires significant time commitment, and I was married and had four young children at the home and I spent time each day reading, praying, singing, and playing with them, as well as putting them to bed at night. For some reason, with all of this, I felt compelled, on top of it all, to go to the college of religion and take a graduate course on Greek New Testament Textual Criticism. In that class, I learned that in the 22nd chapter of the Book of Luke, there are important verses that we often quote in church. In these verses, Christ is in the Garden of Gethsemane working out the great atonement. Beginning in verse 43 we read, ‘And there appeared an angel unto him, from heaven, strengthening him. And being in agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the Now that, Brothers and Sisters, is one of the finest descriptions that exists of this incredible moment in the Garden of Gethsemane. If you look at the thousands of early manuscripts of the New Testament, however, you will discover that there are some in which those verses do not exist. We read in the Book of Mormon that plain and precious truths would be removed from the Bible. Here is an instance in which some of the early manuscripts don’t have those verses in them. Now some scholars will look at the various manuscripts and say, ‘well, if some manuscripts have these verses in them and some do not, these verses must be questionable.’ And so they read these verses as a C-level passage rather than as an A-level passage. In other words, they cast doubt on them. But we, Brothers and Sisters, have another testament of Jesus Christ. We can go the Book of Mormon and we can read a powerful confirmation of these words in Mosiah Chapter 3 verse 7. ‘And lo, he shall suffer temptations and pain of body, hunger, thirst, fatigue, even more than man can suffer, except it be unto death; for behold, blood cometh from every pore, so great shall be his anguish for the wickedness and abominations of his people.’
The Book of Mormon confirms the authenticity of important New Testament details about the atonement of Jesus Christ, the key event in all of human history.
This passage and a similar one in section 19 of the Doctrine and Covenants serve as second and third witnesses to the atonement of Jesus Christ that we covenant each weak to remember as we participate in the ordinance of the sacrament.
Brothers and Sisters, I testify to you that the Book of Mormon is another testament of Jesus Christ, and that, if we study it, we will grow in faith in ways that are difficult without. There is a reason the Book of Mormon has been preserved to come forth in our day. There is a reason why the Prophet Joseph Smith was charged so severely to keep the record safe, and there is a reason why he and others suffered valiantly in order to bring it forth, as Doctrine and Covenants 135 says, ‘the salvation of a ruined world.’
The Book of Mormon is for us and our day. It was compiled anciently and translated in modern times by the gift and power of God for us so that we will not forget. So that we will always remember the Lord Jesus Christ as we covenant to do when we partake of the sacrament. If we will study the Book of Mormon regularly, we will have keen insights about the Lord and his work, and we will obtain the faith to meet the many challenges that we will each face on this earth and that are, indeed, a part of our purpose for being here. I leave that testimony with you in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
Dallin H. Oaks:
"Brother Turley has given us a marvelous account of Joseph Smith and the translation of the Book of Mormon. I will now speak of the second question about the truth of the restored gospel, the continuing authority of the church's prophetic leadership. I will do so under the heading of 'apostasy'.
Throughout our recorded religious history, we see a pattern of apostasy and restoration. The great prophets we learn about in the scriptures were often individuals who restored gospel truths that had been corrupted by apostasy. Noah, Enoch, Abraham, and Moses, to mention only a few. There are two main causes, or manifestations of apostasy, mentioned in the scriptures. The first is disobedience to the commandments of God. Thus, through the prophet Isaiah, the Lord declared: ‘The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof, because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinances, broken the everlasting covenant.’
The scriptures are filled with similar statements. We will say little about this kind of apostasy, but concentrate our remarks on the second cause, or manifestation. The scriptures, ancient and modern, have many warnings about false prophets. This is the second cause, or manifestation, of apostasy. Here is our Savior's teaching on this subject. Note that these teachings are addressed to his disciples, not to unbelievers. False prophets can be most threatening to those who already believe in prophets.
‘And Jesus answered and said unto them, take heed that no man deceive you, for many shall come in my name, saying, 'I am Christ,' and deceive many.’ He continued as follows: ‘And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.’
Now, I switch to the Joseph Smith translation of these passages, which give a significant additional warning and an important way to avoid being deceived.
‘For in those days there shall also arise false Christ’s and false prophets and shall show great signs and wonders insomuch that if possible they shall deceive the very elect who are the elect according to the covenant. Whoso treasureth up my word shall not be deceived.’
After the Savior's resurrection and ascension, his apostles continued these warnings. Paul taught the elders, ‘take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock over which the Holy Ghost hath made thee overseers, to feed the church of God which he hath purchased with his own blood. For I know this, that after my departing, shall grievous wolves enter among you, not sparing the flock. Also, of your own selves, shall man arise, speaking perverse things to draw away disciples. The apostle John wrote, ‘beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits, whether they are of God, because many false prophets are gone out into the world.’
The Savior had a great teaching on how to identify false prophets. ‘Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so, every good tree bringeth forth good fruit, but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. Wherefore, by their fruits ye shall know them.’
Here’s a visual to help you remember this important teaching. Here are good fruits and here are decaying or undesirable fruits. When you are judging the truth of teachings, look to the fruits of those teachings in the lives of those who follow them. By their fruits ye shall know them.
Now Brother Turley will explain how the pattern of apostasy, the Savior and his apostles described continued even after the Gospel was restored by the prophet Joseph Smith.
Richard E Turley:
“If you have read the Old Testament, the New Testament, and the Book of Mormon, you will realize that apostasy is a frequent phenomenon throughout the history of the ancient church. It has also been a frequent phenomenon in modern times. The history of our latter-day church furnishes numerous examples. Apostasy leads to chaos, which is contrary to the way of the Lord.
In the scriptures, the Lord has repeatedly emphasized the importance of order. In the Doctrine and Covenants, for example, the Lord declared, ‘My house is a house of order saith the Lord God.’
When the church was organized on April the 6th, 1830, the Lord gave a revelation that is now contained in the 21st section of the Doctrine and Covenants.
In this revelation, the Lord, speaking of Joseph Smith, commanded: ‘Wherefore, meaning the church, thou shalt give heed to all his words and commandments which he shall give unto you as he receiveth them, walking in all holiness before me. For his word, ye shall receive as if from mine own mouth, in all patience and faith. For by so doing, by doing these things, the gates of hell shall not prevail against you. Yea, and the Lord God will disperse the powers of darkness from before you and cause the heavens to shake for your good and his name’s glory.”
The first principle of order therefore, is that the Lord speaks to the church through the prophet. In other words, the Lord wanted to make it clear to the Saints that the Prophet was the head of the church on earth, the mouthpiece of the Lord.
This was the first of the many principles related to order in the church that the Lord laid down in early revelations.
Another later principle appears in a revelation that many members of the church call ‘The Articles and Covenants.’ We can think of it as the Church’s Constitution or the first general handbook of instructions. Today, we call it section 20 of the Doctrine and Covenants.
In Doctrine and Covenants section 20 verses 65 and 66, the Lord makes it clear that no one can be appointed to an office in the Church without a vote of the church. Our second principle therefore is that no one can be appointed to an office without the vote of the church members.
Not long after the church was organized, one of the eight witnesses of the Book of Mormon, Hyrum Page, announced that he was receiving revelations by means of a seer stone. Several church members, including Oliver Cowdery, were intrigued by Page’s purported revelations. In section 28 of the Doctrine and Covenants, however, the Lord reminded Oliver Cowdery ‘but behold verily verily I say unto thee, that no one shall be appointed to receive commandments and revelations in this church, excepting my servant Joseph Smith, Jr., for he receiveth them even as Moses.’
The Lord then counseled Oliver, ‘Thou shalt take thy brother Hyrum Page between him and thee alone and tell him that those things which he hath written from that stone are not of me, and that Satan deceiveth him. For behold these things have not been appointed unto him, neither shall anything be appointed to any of this church contrary to the church covenants.’
Then the Lord reiterated an important principle: ‘For all things must be done in order, and by common consent in the church by the prayer of faith.’
Taken together, these verses provide a third principle: No one is to receive revelation for the church except the prophet.
When the church’s headquarters moved from New York to Kirtland, Ohio, similar difficulties arose, as they have throughout the history of the church. Before the Saints moved to Ohio, the Lord promised that He would reveal His law there.
Section 42 of the Doctrine and Covenants was understood by church members as being a fulfillment of this promise, and that revelation contains further warnings against those who had set themselves up as receiving revelation for the church or who teach unauthorized doctrines.
The Lord warns, ‘again I say unto you that it shall not be given to anyone to preach my gospel, or to build up my church, except he be ordained by some one who has authority, and it is known to the church that he has authority and has been regularly ordained by the heads of the church. And again, the elders, priests, and teachers of this church shall teach the principles of my gospel, which are the Bible and the Book of Mormon, in the which is the fullness of the gospel. And they shall observe the covenants and articles to do them, and these shall be their teachings, as they shall be directed by the Spirit. And the spirit shall be given you by the prayer of faith; and if ye receive not the Spirit ye shall not teach.’
Our fourth principle, therefore, is that no one is to preach or build up the church except he that be regularly ordained by the heads of the church. Also, church members are not to teach their own doctrines. They are to teach from the scriptures.
Furthermore, they are to observe the covenants and church articles and teach from them as well.
During the Kirtland period, a Ms. Hubble set herself up as receiving revelations for the church. We call her Ms. Hubble because we are not completely sure of her first name. Her errors prompted another revelation from the Lord, who, if you look at all these experiences strung together, was being remarkably patient with the young church. That revelation, now section 43 of the Doctrine and Covenants, reminded church leaders that the prophet was the only one appointed to receive revelations for the church. As to others who might claim to do so, the Lord directed, “And this shall be a law unto you, that ye receive not the teachings of any that shall come before you as revelations or commandments; And this I give unto you that you may not be deceived, that you may know they are not of me. For verily I say unto you, that he that is ordained of me shall come in at the gate and be ordained as I have told you before, to teach those revelations which you have received and shall receive through him whom I have appointed.’
That then is another important principle of order. He that is ordained shall come in at the gate and be properly ordained. In addition to these challenges faced by the church during this time period, there were many enthusiastic members who sought so zealously to receive spiritual manifestations that they began experiencing spiritual phenomena that led to unworthy behavior and, once again, basic violations of the principles of order that the Lord have given again and again. To counter such overzealousness, the Lord gave revelation to the Prophet Joseph Smith, now section 50 of the Doctrine and Covenants, in which he declared, ‘Hearken, O ye elders of my church, and give ear to the voice of the living God; and attend to the words of wisdom which shall be given unto you. Behold I say unto you that there are many spirits which are false spirits, which have gone forth in the earth, deceiving the world. And also Satan hath sough to deceive you, that he might overthrow you.’
We can go on and on with examples with people who have apostatized by ignoring the Lord's principles of order and instead setting themselves up for a life unto the world. The scriptures refer to this practice as ‘priestcraft.’ Just one more historical example and then I will summarize and conclude.
Following the martyrdom of the Prophet Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum, several parties tried to assert themselves as the new leaders of the church.
The saints, however, voted to sustain Brigham Young and fellow members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles as the church leaders. Still, this decision did not stop many others from trying to claim leadership for themselves. Church members today, in general, know that Sidney Rigdon sought to be appointed guardian of the church after Joseph Smith’s death. But relatively few today know that one of the most dominant claimants of the 1840’s was a relatively new convert names James Jesse Strang. Strang was reportedly baptized by Joseph Smith in Nauvoo, Illinois around February of 1844. Although very few people knew Strang in the church, after Joseph Smith’s death, the new convert claimed that he had been designated to lead the church, by the prophet, just a few days before his death. Strang even produced a three-page letter of appointment purportedly written by Joseph Smith on June the 18th, 1844. The letter coordinates supposed revelation from the Lord stating that, to him, ‘James J Strang shall the gathering of the people be, for he shall plant the state of Zion in Wisconsin and I will establish it and there shall my people have peace and rest and shall not be moved.’
Strang also claimed to be visited by an angel and to have unearthed and translated an ancient record. Strang tried very hard to copy Joseph Smith’s experiences and charisma even going so far as organized his own Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with headquarters in Voree, Wisconsin and ultimately attracting as many as 2,000 followers, including some previously notable church members. Strang also tried to duplicate many church practices, including Baptisms for the Dead, Endowment Ceremony, and Consecration. Eventually, however, as with most of these movements, his faith and Strang himself was killed in 1856. Once Strang’s supposed letter of appointment became accessible to scholars, it became abundantly clear that Strang was a fraud, a false prophet.
The top half of this slide, which you see in front of you, shows what Strang claimed to be the signature of Joseph Smith on his appointment letter. The bottom half of the slide shows a genuine Joseph Smith signature. Now, it does not take a handwriting expert to figure out that the top signature is a forgery, and that Strang’s claim to have been appointed by Joseph Smith was nothing but a bold dissention. In many ways, Strang was like many other apostates throughout church history, who have tried to assert leadership over church members outside the order established by the Lord. Let’s review again, in summary, what those principles of order are.
Frist, the Lord speaks to the church through the Prophet.
Second, no one can be appointed to an office without a vote of the church.
Third, no one is to receive revelation for the church except the prophet.
Next, no one is to preach or build up the church except he be regularly ordained by the head of the church.
Next, church members are not to teach their own unauthorized doctrine.
They are to teach from the scriptures. Also, church members shall observe the covenants and church articles and teach from them as well.
Finally, he that is ordained shall come in at the gate and be properly ordained, not claiming some kind of secret ordination.
Brothers and Sisters I testify to you that the history of the church and the revelations of the Lord show clearly principles of order that must apply in the case of individuals that want to be brought forward as equal speaking on behalf of the church. This order has been meticulously followed from the very first day of the church’s organization, when the Prophet Joseph Smith, on April 6th, 1830, asked that those present for the meeting sustain him as the prophet of the Lord, which then did. I testify to you that if we follow these principles of order, we will not be deceived, and I leave this testimony with you in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
Dallin H Oaks:
Now I will speak on some current applications of the principles that have just been reviewed. Apostasy continues even today. Its two causes or manifestations are clearly evident. The first, disobedience to the commands, is most visible. The second manifestation of apostasy, false prophets, is less visible but a reality nonetheless. I speak more of this.
The apostle Paul taught Timothy as follows: ‘Now the spirits speaks expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils.’
This reference to ‘seducing spirits’ is a description of the spirits of darkness that inspire false prophets to persuade some believers to depart from the faith. The pattern is for some false prophet to claim that the spirit has revealed to him or her that the established leaders of the church are in error in some way and that he or she is to be the Lord’s agent to correct them. This is an obvious violation of the principles of order Brother Turley has taught so well from the revelations. The so-called ‘new prophet’ may pursue his or her correcting mission by a variety of means; organizing a new church, advocating a change of doctrine, or opposing some church policy. We have seen all of these tactics and many more in our lifetime. The content of the new message may be more than what is true and correct, or it may be less. But it is always: ‘I have a better way than the Lord’s current leaders.’
The process can be illustrated by these pictures. Here’s the temple, the great symbol and manifestation of our faith. There are now more than 140 operating temples, just one fruit of the restored gospel and of our prophetic leadership. How do we view and use the temple, and how do we view our prophetic leadership? Here is a visual representing how we approach or view the temple. This is symbolic of how we view the church and its leaders. Do we see the temple or the church and its doctrine in its entirety? Including its fruits in our lives present and eternal, or do we search for some defect in its many parts, ignoring the magnificent, overall structure and function and focusing on and magnifying that alleged defect to drag ourselves and others into apostasy?
Brother and sisters, there will be small defects in any mortal structure or any mortal life, but we should never lose sight of the wonderful, all-encompassing plan and doctrine of the Lord’s church. By their fruits, not by the occasional fruit fly, ye shall know them. Now Brother Turley and I will review some questions we sometimes hear from persons being influenced by the teachings of false prophets.
Richard E Turley:
One claim that we sometimes hear is that the church is no longer the church that was restored to the earth by the prophet Joseph. That it fell into apostasy and that the priesthood keys were not passed to Brigham Young.
Dallin H Oaks:
Answer-- then who held them? If there are no priesthood keys then the authority of the priesthood cannot be used upon the earth.
Richard E Turley:
Historically it’s very interesting to see who received priesthood keys and ordinances before the death of the prophet Joseph Smith and who did not. After members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles served a faithful mission in the British Isles and returned to Nauvoo, the prophet Joseph Smith gave them increasingly larger responsibilities and he also gave them the ordinances that we now experience in the Temple. When Joseph Smith died in 1844, only a few people comparatively had received these keys and ordinances, and therefore the pool of potential successors was very small.
On August the 8th, 1844, when the saints had the opportunity to choose between the quorum of the Twelve Apostles and Sidney Rigdon, whose activities had become erratic, perhaps some think because of injuries he sustained during severe persecutions, the saints who might have been divided, instead according to shorthand minutes we have in our possession voted overwhelmingly for Brigham Young and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. To me, that suggests that the spirit spoke strongly on this occasion, and that the saints had voted overwhelmingly for Brigham Young and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles knew where the keys went and in fact that is where historically we know that they lay because those were the brethren who had the keys and had the right to perform the ordinances necessary for salvation and exaltation.
Dallin H. Oaks:
One more point on this claim; the idea that the established Prophet has strayed and needs to be replaced is an idea Satan has planted in the minds of apostates from the very beginning. For example, at the time of Christ, the Savior was challenged by those who claimed allegiance to Abraham and Moses using the teachings of prophets past to criticize the Lord himself.
Turning to another claim, the new prophet or leader, the false prophet is receiving revelation to correct the present one.
Richard E Turley:
The idea that the current prophet has strayed from the truth and needs to be corrected by a new prophet is always accompanied by that claim that someone is receiving substitute revelations. But this goes entirely against all the rules of order that we talked about previously.
In 1912 the first presidency warned, ‘When visions, dreams, tongues, prophecy, impressions or an extraordinary gift or inspiration, convey something out of harmony with the accepted revelations of the Church or contrary to the decisions that its constituted authorities, latter-day saints may know that it is not of God no matter how plausible it may appear.’
More recently, President Spencer W. Kimball affirmed this point by saying ‘I believe that if one wants revelations enough to crave them beyond the rightness of it, that eventually he will get his revelations but they may not come from God. I am sure that there may be many spectacular things performed because the devil is very responsive.’
Another claim is that the church is not teaching what is necessary for exaltation, for example, some say that only those who see the face of Jesus Christ in mortality will receive Celestial Glory.
Dallin H. Oaks:
Of course, all of the righteous desire to see the face of our Savior, but the suggestions that this must happen in mortality is a familiar tactic of the adversary.
To identify a worthy goal, such as to achieve exaltation, and then to use the desirability of that goal and people’s enthusiasm for it to obscure the new means the adversary suggests to achieve it. The means are important, even vital. As the Lord said in another setting, ‘it must needs be done in mine own way.’
Another claim we sometimes hear is that the leaders won’t answer our doubts. Doubts. Here we need to define the difference between doubts and questions. Questions, when asked with a sincere desire to increase ones understanding and faith, are again encouraged. Such questions, questions we call them, are asked with the real intent of better understanding and more fully obeying the will of the Lord. Questions are very different from doubts.
Richard E Turley:
Asked in faith, questions can lead to revelation. Joseph Smith received many of the revelations now contained in the Doctrine and Covenants, and he received his first vision because he had questions. One difference between questions asked in faith and doubts is that questions lead to faith and to revelation whereas doubts lead to disobedience, which in turn renders people less able to receive revelation, or in other words, doubt is darkness. Questions asked in faith lead to light.
The Lord will answer our questions but not necessarily in a way that we want. He is omniscient, and he knows what is best for us, better than we know what is good for ourselves. He will answer in his own time and his own way. We know from the history of the church that even the Prophet Joseph Smith did not always receive answers in the way he wished. On one occasion, as we see from the Doctrine and Covenants, he sought for the Lord to know the timing of the Lord’s coming. The Lord’s answer to him, a very direct answer, showed that the Lord was not going to give that answer to him at that time. We must be able to have faith not only in the Lord and what he says to us but also in the Lord’s timing in answering our questions and giving us revelations. (1:03:40)
Dallin H. Oaks:
The first step in resolving questions is always to stand as we read in Alma 1:25, ‘Stand steadfast and immovable in keeping the commandments of God.’
Richard E Turley:
Another claim that we sometimes hear is that current apostles have no right to run the affairs of the church since they do not meet the New Testament standard of apostles because they do not testify of having seen Christ.
Dallin H. Oaks:
The first answer to this claim is that modern apostles are called to be witnesses of the name of Christ in all the world, Doctrine and Covenants 107:23.
This is not to witness of a personal manifestation. To witness of the name is to witness of the plan, the work, or mission such as the atonement and the authority or priesthood of the Lord Jesus Christ, which an apostle who holds the keys is uniquely responsible to do.
Of course apostles are also witnesses of Christ just like all members of the Church who have the gift of the Holy Ghost. This is because the mission of the Holy Ghost is to witness of the Father and the Son. In addition, while some early apostles and other members of the church have had the sublime spiritual experience of seeing the Savior and some have made a public record of this, in the circumstances of today we are counseled not to speak of our most sacred spiritual experiences, otherwise with modern technology that can broadcast something all over the world, a remark made in a sacred and a private setting can be said abroad in violation of the Savior's commandment not to cast our pearls before swine.
Here’s another claim. The church is focused on following the brethren instead of seeking Christ.
Richard E Turley:
This is a preposterous claim. If you think about the period in the New Testament following the crucifixion of the Savior, would you expect that followers of Jesus Christ would follow someone other than the Lord’s disciples? Indeed, following someone other than the Lord’s called servants is a sign of apostasy.
As the Lord said clearly to the Prophet Joseph Smith in the 84th section of the Doctrine and Covenants, ‘he that receiveth my servants receiveth me.’ Furthermore in the 59th section we read ‘And let them journey from thence preaching the word by the way, saying none other things than that which the prophets and apostles have written, and that which is taught them by the Comforter through the prayer of faith.’
In section 42 of the Doctrine of Covenants the Lord says, ‘And again, the elders, priests and teachers of this church shall teach the principles of my gospel, which are in the Bible and the Book of Mormon, in the which is the fullness of the gospel. And they shall observe the covenants and church articles to do them, and these shall be their teachings, as they shall be directed by the Spirit.’
Dallin H. Oaks:
Thank you brother Turley. Brethren and Sisters we come now to the conclusion of our presentation. When you follow false prophets, when you start toward apostasy, you are on the wrong side. I know what it means to be on the wrong side in another situation. I remember a time when I was president of Brigham Young University that we were to announce the establishment of the Ezra Taft Benson Agriculture and Food Institute. The announcement was planned to be at the BYU farm. President Benson was in attendance. To add some human interest to the ceremony, someone had the idea of President Benson and President Oaks, both former farm boys, engaging in a cow-milking contest. I approved the idea, assuming there would be two cows. But when the time came and they led us to the sight of the contest there was only one cow, two buckets, two men, but only one cow. Now what would you do?
The district news recorded the scene, and one of their writers described my choice to go to the left side. Quote, ‘Dallin was milking the bovine from the left side, which is a big no-no in the dairy industry. Why the wrong side? It’s easy to explain.
Dallin was sharing the milking chores with President Ezra Taft Benson of the Council of the Twelve. Now, there is nothing in the manual, but Dallin did not fall off the turnip wagon yesterday, you know?’ The article continues, ‘When the president of the church-owned school with the president of the council of the twelve, he wants to be on the safe side. The safe side is the unsafe side.’ What happened? The district news explained, quote, ‘President Oaks positioned himself on the left of the huge holstering and President Benson sat on her right. Gingerly, the milking began. The contest had only been in progress for a few seconds, however, when it became evident that the cow was the least enthusiastic participant. With a swift kick, she knocked over not only President Oak’s milk bucket but also the president himself.
He flipped over in a not too graceful backwards summersault as President Benson sat on the other side of the cow chuckling at the scene.’ Here is President Benson’s reaction: (pictured)
Brothers and Sisters, don’t get on the wrong side. And now its time for us to conclude. Brother Turley, please.
Richard E Turley:
Brothers and Sisters, this evening we have talked with you about the wonderful experience we have as a church and having the Book of Mormon and how that book was preserved for our day through thousands of years by ancient prophets and then was brought forth by the gift and power of god to the Prophet Joseph Smith. I testify to you that if we will read and follow the Book of Mormon we will grow in our faith and we will also grow in our faith if we follow the current leadership of the church and those who are appointed to succeed them as time goes on. There is no salvation or exhalation through false prophets. The Lord has laid down patterns and principles of order. Those principles are clearly laid out in the scriptures available to all of us. Those scriptures make it clear how people become leaders of the church and what is required of them to become such. When we follow those appointed leaders we will be blessed. The scriptures and the history of the church show very clearly that following false prophets, in the end, leads only to unhappiness. I testify that if we will follow the word of the Lord, as found in the scriptures, and in the words of the modern prophets, directed by the Lord Jesus Christ, that we will receive the greatest of all blessings, even peace in this life and eternal life in the world to come. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
Dallin H Oaks:
Brothers and sisters- Richard E Turley Jr. and I, from our respective points of view, have spent many weeks researching the matter that we have presented to you visually and by the spoken word. The principles we have drawn from the scriptures are the truth, and we know from reading ancient and modern history that the pattern of apostasy is as clear as the patter of restoration and that the existence of false prophets, as we have defined that term today, is as real in our day as it was when past prophets spoke of and prophesied of false prophets in the last days. I also testify to you that the teachings the savior has given us in his own words recorded in the New Testament and in modern revelation through his authorized spokesman are true and they set out for us the way to avoid being deceived by seducing spirits, to use the scriptural term, or by those who have themselves been deceived by seducing spirits. Stand fast with the leadership of the church. I heard President Hinckley in describing a revelation he had received concerning the building of small temples form which he will soon benefit in this part of the world that he did not claim perfection that there was only one perfect person who had ever lived upon this earth and even the prophets of God were not perfect. But, as the Prophet Joseph Smith said, on a great occasion, ‘there is no error in the teachings.’
Spoken under the influence of the spirit of the Lord, witnessed to be true in the hearts and minds of those who have the gift of the Holy Ghost, those teachings are the Lord’s will to his people. And I testify to you that these teachings are true and that if we hold with and follow the current leadership of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we will stay on the path toward eternal life. Eternal life, our destiny, as children of God, our eternal Father, and I testify to you of these things in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

"Elder Oaks was not scheduled for an assignment that weekend so decided to use his free time to visit an area with a concentration of members, knowing that some members have questions from time to time that trouble them." - Church spokesman Eric Hawkins
----
A. "By their fruits ye shall know them." Almost every walk of faith is able to produce good fruit. From Presbyterians to Buddhists to secular humanists, you can find good people. So there needs to be more.
B. Oaks says they spent "many weeks" planning this, so why did Hawkins say what he said?
C. Interesting how Turley emphasizes "vote" instead of "sustain."
Q&A Session
1. Priesthood keys - A "key" is a metaphor for an action or ordinance that someone with the priesthood can perform, as he's been given prior permission by someone with the authority to grant said permission. It's easy to get lost in the semantics of priesthood keys, but if Brigham didn't hold the "keys" then who did? Joseph Smith at different points designated different people his successor so it was understandable why there was so much confusion in 1844. The meeting where Brigham won the majority of votes wasn't a General Conference; it was primarily a meeting where Sidney Rigdon and the Apostles would argue over who should lead the church now. No one was arguing they were the new prophet, as Joseph was the Prophet. Then Strang came along with his story of revelation and he managed to persuade a large percentage of the scattered Mormons to follow him, including some of the witnesses of the golden plates. The Quorum of the 12 Apostles led those who would follow them, and it was more than three years later when the majority of the Apostles agreed to let Brigham form a new First Presidency.
2. Oaks: "One more point on this claim; the idea that the established Prophet has strayed and needs to be replaced is an idea Satan has planted in the minds of apostates from the very beginning. For example, at the time of Christ, the Savior was challenged by those who claimed allegiance to Abraham and Moses using the teachings of prophets past to criticize the Lord himself." Actually, Christ came to point out that the current authorities - the Pharisees - had strayed. By definition of the time, Jesus was an apostate.
3. Turley: "Another claim is that the church is not teaching what is necessary for exaltation, for example, some say that only those who see the face of Jesus Christ in mortality will receive Celestial Glory." The only people who've heard this claim are those who listen to Denver Snuffer and/or Rock Waterman, so why not just name them? And then the answer is pretty much "this question is of Satan."
4. The distinction/warping of the definitions of "questions" and "doubts" is confusing and damaging. What about those members who had "doubts" about Sidney Rigdon and therefore voted for Brigham Young? What about those members through the decades who had doubts that God really wanted to keep the priesthood away from those of African descent?
5. "He who has never doubted has never thought." - Hugh B. Brown
6. Oaks: "The first answer to this claim is that modern apostles are called to be witnesses of the name of Christ in all the world." How is this different from every elder and sister missionary?
7. Oaks: "This is not to witness of a personal manifestation. To witness of the name is to witness of the plan, the work, or mission such as the atonement and the authority or priesthood of the Lord Jesus Christ, which an apostle who holds the keys is uniquely responsible to do." Still not clear what these keys are, since all members can "witness" about Christ's work, the atonement, etc.
8. Oaks: "Of course apostles are also witnesses of Christ just like all members of the Church who have the gift of the Holy Ghost." Then why do we need apostles?
9. Oaks: "While some early apostles and other members of the church have had the sublime spiritual experience of seeing the Savior and some have made a public record of this, in the circumstances of today we are counseled not to speak of our most sacred spiritual experiences." Counseled by who, when?
10. Oaks: "Otherwise with modern technology that can broadcast something all over the world, a remark made in a sacred and a private setting can be said abroad in violation of the Savior's commandment not to cast our pearls before swine." If you're commanded to witness to all the world, then witness. Proclaim. Share. Joseph Smith told the world what he saw. Joseph F. Smith's vision of heaven became D&C 138. Is this just to hide that most of the prophets and apostles have not seen Jesus? The most recent example I can find is Elder Haight's talk in 1989. Why have the heavens dried up?
Gospel Principles, 1997 - "Twelve Apostles, who are special witnesses of Jesus Christ, teach the gospel in all parts of the world. Other general officers of the Church with special assignments include the Presiding Bishopric and the Quorums of the Seventy."
Gospel Principles, 2009 - "Twelve Apostles, who are special witnesses of the name of Jesus Christ, teach the gospel and regulate the affairs of the Church in all parts of the world. Other general officers of the Church with special assignments, including the Presiding Bishopric and the Quorums of the Seventy, serve under the direction of the First Presidency and the Twelve."
11. This is basically saying the current First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve are infallible.
"In our unique opportunity to be here together in this setting, acknowledge the presence of Elder Dallin H Oaks, of the quorum of the twelve apostles, who will be presiding at our devotional this evening. We also recognize Brother Richard E Turley, Assistant Church Historian, who will be presenting things this evening with Elder Oaks. We also acknowledge the presence of Sister Christian Oaks and Sister Turley, here with us this evening. We will begin the evening by singing on page 3, ‘Now Let Us Rejoice,’ express appreciate to Sister Wells and Sister Dunn, who will be leading the music and at the organ. Following the opening hymn, we will have the invocation by Brother David Dunn and we’ll turn the time to Elder Oaks. At the conclusion of the presentation, we will sing on page 260, ‘Who's on the Lord's Side,’ and then Sister Lisa Rawlings will offer the benediction.”
